Chapter 2 - THE RECORDING HE COULDN'T ERASE
Adrian lunged for the backpack.
Mara turned, shielding Ellie with her body. One guard caught Mara's arms while the other took the bag. Ellie screamed and kicked at his legs.
“Don't hurt her,” Gabriel whispered.
It was the first clear sentence he had managed.
Adrian removed the phone, stopped the recording, and smashed it against the stone fireplace. The screen went black.
Then sirens sounded beyond the rain.
Mara's coworker had called 911 exactly as instructed. The guards looked toward Adrian. Their uncertainty mattered. They had been told Gabriel was undergoing a private medical intervention and Ellie had run away during a tantrum. They had not been told police were forbidden.
One guard stepped away from Mara.
Adrian dropped the syringe beside the desk and said calmly, “My brother is terminally ill. This woman entered our home and interfered with his medication.”
Mara kicked the syringe beneath a low bookcase before he could retrieve it.
Paramedics arrived with police. Gabriel's blood pressure was dangerously low, and his heart rhythm was unstable. They disconnected the mansion IV, secured the syringe as potential evidence, and transported him to Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Adrian produced a valid healthcare proxy naming him as Gabriel's decision-maker whenever Gabriel lacked capacity. He also showed a signed home-care plan authorizing IV medication for a chronic cardiac condition.
Suddenly, what Mara had witnessed was wrapped in legitimate paperwork.
Adrian accused her of trespass, assault, and using Ellie to steal confidential business data. Officers interviewed Mara separately. She was released without charges that night, but the complaint remained open.
Ellie was placed temporarily with a court-appointed emergency guardian because her mother was dead, Gabriel was unconscious, and Adrian was both next of kin and a suspect.
The broken phone appeared useless.
It was not.
Gabriel had activated an emergency-recording application before giving the device to Ellie. Every thirty seconds, the encrypted file uploaded to an account controlled by his outside attorney, Rebecca Sloan.
The final segment showed Adrian holding the syringe. It captured his statement about Gabriel's heart giving out and his demand to know what was in the bag.
But the recording began after the restraints and IV were already in place. It did not show what substance Adrian had prepared, why Gabriel was tied to the chair, or whether the words had another context.

Then Rebecca opened an earlier file uploaded from the same phone.
Gabriel's weak voice said, “Ellie, go to the night store. Find the woman with the name tag. Don't come back unless she brings help.”
