Chapter 9 - WHAT COULD BE PROVED
The jury convicted Adrian of unlawful restraint, coercion, evidence tampering, obstruction, and financial fraud.
They remained divided on attempted murder.
After two more days, the judge declared a mistrial on that count. Prosecutors had to decide whether to try it again.
Public anger demanded an immediate conviction. Evidence demanded patience.
A second forensic review resolved the disputed IV timing. The smart infusion pump stored an internal log independent of the mansion network. Sedative flow increased manually fourteen minutes after Sheila left. Adrian's fingerprint was found on the pump control beneath the protective cover. At the same time, his phone searched how rapidly Gabriel's cardiac condition could deteriorate under deep sedation.
The new evidence did not prove the uninjected syringe alone. It proved Adrian deliberately created the medical crisis in which he intended to use it.
Facing retrial, Adrian pleaded guilty to attempted murder without an agreement on sentence. He continued claiming he meant only to frighten Gabriel into signing, but the plea required him to admit conduct intended to cause death.
Dr. Pierce was not charged with conspiracy. He received licensing sanctions and civil liability for prescribing without examination. Calvin served a reduced sentence after cooperation. Northbridge paid penalties for undisclosed side arrangements but was not accused of knowing about the poisoning plan.
Bell Meridian recovered the Chestnut Advisory payment and sued Adrian for losses. The company refinanced through a consortium selected by the independent board. Jobs were preserved without transferring control under the tainted deal.
Gabriel did not return as chief executive.
Shareholders found that concealing his health, delaying authorities, and involving Ellie had endangered both company and child. He remained a nonexecutive shareholder under medical and governance supervision.
The family court returned Ellie to him gradually after parenting evaluations and therapy. It did not treat surviving his brother as proof that every choice he made was wise.
At sentencing, Gabriel asked the judge to consider Adrian's childhood beside him—not to excuse the crime, but to avoid rewriting their entire family as if one brother had always been evil.
Adrian received a lengthy prison sentence, restitution orders, and a permanent bar from fiduciary leadership.
Outside court, reporters called Mara a hero.
