Chapter 7 - THE SIGNATURE IN THE GUARD'S CAR
The document carried Gabriel's signature.
Handwriting experts concluded it was genuine. Adrian had not forged his brother's name. He had obtained it while Gabriel was impaired.
Gabriel remembered signing one page because Adrian said the hospital needed renewed consent for home medication. He did not remember reading a voting extension.
Toxicology and Sheila's IV log placed Gabriel under excessive sedation at the likely time of signing. The document was voided in civil court for incapacity and misrepresentation.
Calvin testified that Adrian told the guards Gabriel was refusing necessary treatment because of delirium. Calvin helped restrain him. When Mara arrived, Adrian ordered the phone seized and the envelope destroyed.
“Why keep it?” prosecutors asked.
“Insurance,” Calvin said.
He was not a heroic witness. He had participated until protecting himself became more valuable than obeying Adrian. He accepted a plea to unlawful restraint and evidence concealment.
The second guard, Owen Blake, maintained that he believed the medical explanation. Video showed him releasing Mara as soon as sirens approached and directing paramedics to Gabriel. Prosecutors declined to charge him, though his employer terminated him for failing to verify the medical order.
Dr. Pierce surrendered his prescribing license pending disciplinary proceedings and cooperated. Records showed Adrian deliberately exaggerated Gabriel's symptoms and omitted that Sheila would be dismissed. Pierce's negligence enabled the plan, but evidence did not prove he knew of an intent to kill.
Adrian was charged with attempted murder, unlawful restraint, coercion, evidence tampering, financial fraud, and obstruction.
He attacked the indictment intelligently. The syringe was never injected. Gabriel's existing IV overdose could have resulted from Sheila's error. The secret recording faced legal challenges. His healthcare proxy was valid. His brother had a real heart condition.
Prosecutors responded with sequence: dismissing the nurse, obtaining medication through misleading claims, increasing sedation, restraining Gabriel, securing an impaired signature, stating that death would appear natural, lunging for the phone, and ordering evidence destroyed.
Mara's testimony connected the sequence but did not replace it.
Before trial, Northbridge produced internal messages showing its deal team had questioned the Chestnut Advisory payment. One executive wrote that Adrian wanted “the brother problem resolved before morning.”
