Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN IN THE AUDIT LOG

The anonymous internal-audit source turned out to be a woman named Denise Harper.
Fifty-three.
Halcyon's director of compliance.
She had worked there before Julian became CEO.
Denise met Sarah after midnight in a hotel lobby.
“I sent the first warning.”
“Why anonymously?”
“Because Richard controlled the board.”
“Why me?”
“Because your signature was the only thing he couldn't legally manufacture without leaving a trail.”
Sarah almost smiled at the irony.
He had tried anyway.
Denise had watched Project Crown develop for fourteen months.
She challenged the consulting payments.
Richard overruled her.
She flagged Victoria's conflicts.
Records disappeared.
She requested review of the Veyron valuation.
Her access was reduced.
Then she discovered the spousal-consent document.
Sarah's digital signature.
Something looked wrong.
Not visually.
Timing.
The authentication occurred while Sarah was photographed at a charity dinner.
Denise searched access logs.
Victoria had used Sarah's home IP through remote software.
That was when Denise contacted Megan.
“You could have gone to regulators.”
“I planned to.”
“What stopped you?”
Denise looked tired.
“My husband has cancer.”
Sarah waited.
“Halcyon's insurance covers treatment.”
There it was.
Another form of leverage.
Not a dramatic threat.
A practical fear.
“If I got fired, we could lose everything.”
Sarah did not judge her.
She had learned too much about easy judgments.
“Why come out now?”
“Because Victoria shaved your head.”
Sarah blinked.
Denise's eyes filled.
“I saw the photos after court. I thought—if he can make the CEO's wife look crazy and humiliate her in public, what chance does anyone else have?”
Sarah touched the short stubble growing over her scalp.
For the first time she understood the strange effect of what happened.
Victoria intended the shaving to make Sarah smaller.
Instead it made the abuse visible.
Impossible to explain away completely.
Denise handed over audit logs proving Richard ordered document deletions through Julian's credentials.
Not Julian.
Richard's assistant had administrative override access.
The timing matched.
Julian's account had been weaponized.
But another log showed Julian had noticed unusual activity months earlier and never reported it.
Megan sighed.
“Again.”
Sarah understood.
Not innocent.
Not architect.
Complicit through avoidance.
The board investigation released preliminary findings.
Richard was identified as primary architect of Project Crown.
Victoria as operational participant.
Julian as grossly negligent and potentially complicit in disclosure failures.
Sarah's signature was confirmed forged.
Crown transfers were frozen.
Seventeen million of the twenty-three million was recovered.
Six million remained missing.
Richard disappeared before federal agents could question him.
His private jet was still in Chicago.
Passport unused.
His home empty.
Then Sarah received a package.
No return address.
Inside was a key.
A locker number.
And a handwritten note.
Five minutes was generous.
Sarah stared at the handwriting.
She had seen it before.
On a birthday card.
On old Christmas notes.
Richard Vale.
Megan called federal investigators.
The locker contained cash.
Passports.
A phone.
And a video.
Richard sat behind a desk.
“If you're watching this, Sarah, then Victoria has already betrayed me.”
Sarah's skin went cold.
Richard smiled into the camera.
“You think this began with Project Crown.”
May you like
He leaned closer.
“It began the day Julian met you.”
