Chapter 6 - THE DOCUMENT JULIAN NEVER READ

Julian had signed the financing package in under six minutes.

Two hundred twelve pages.

He admitted it to outside counsel.

His attorney nearly had a stroke.

Victoria told him Sarah had electronically approved the spousal consent.

Julian saw the authentication certificate.

Recognized Sarah's digital identifier.

Then signed.

“Did you ask her?” investigators asked.

“No.”

“Why?”

Julian hesitated.

“Victoria said she'd handled it.”

That sentence became a symbol for everything wrong with his leadership.

She handled it.

He signed.

She explained.

He believed.

She moved money.

He looked away.

At home, Sarah remembered how Julian used to review restaurant bills line by line when they were poor.

Success had not made him more careful.

It had taught him other people would absorb consequences.

The forensic team traced Sarah's digital authentication.

The approval originated from her home laptop.

On a night Sarah had been attending a charity dinner.

Julian was also out.

But someone else had entered the house.

Security logs showed Victoria's keycard.

Sarah stared.

“She had a key.”

Julian looked away.

They were meeting with attorneys present now.

No private conversations.

No trust.

“She sometimes worked from my home office.”

“Our home.”

“Yes.”

“While I was gone.”

“Yes.”

“Did she sleep there too?”

Julian's attorney interrupted.

“Not relevant.”

Sarah looked directly at Julian.

“It is to me.”

Julian answered.

“Yes.”

The word hurt even after everything.

Sarah nodded once.

“Thank you.”

Julian seemed surprised by her calmness.

He should not have been.

Some pain was too old to scream.

Investigators found remote-access software on Sarah's laptop.

Installed eleven months earlier.

Credentials had been copied.

Whoever forged the signature planned far ahead.

Victoria became primary suspect.

But Richard Vale remained untouchable.

He denied knowing Victoria operated Crown Strategic Partners.

Denied knowing she was involved with Julian.

Denied authorizing inflated valuation.

He portrayed himself as an embarrassed father betrayed by his daughter.

It might have worked.

Then Sarah found an old photograph.

Richard holding Victoria at her college graduation.

Julian beside them.

Sarah had taken the picture.

“How could Julian not know?” Megan asked.

Sarah stared at it.

“Richard introduced her as his goddaughter.”

A carefully chosen lie.

Years later Victoria joined Halcyon under her mother's surname.

Julian never questioned it.

Neither had Sarah.

The next corporate attack came from Richard.

He called an emergency board meeting to remove Julian as CEO.

On paper, Sarah should have enjoyed that.

She didn't.

Because Richard nominated himself interim executive chairman.

If approved, the man tied to Project Crown would control the investigation.

Sarah still held indirect voting rights through JSM.

Megan explained:

“You can challenge the vote.”

“On what basis?”

“Founder agreement.”

Sarah frowned.

Halcyon's founders had signed a governance provision years earlier protecting certain voting rights during conflicts of interest.

Sarah had signed as Julian's spouse and JSM co-owner.

At the time she barely cared.

Now the clause mattered.

Any board action involving a conflicted chairman could be referred to shareholders representing at least twelve percent of legacy voting stock.

JSM controlled fourteen.

Sarah could block Richard.

Julian looked at her across the conference table.

“You're going to save my job?”

“No.”

He stared.

“I'm going to stop Richard from taking it.”

“That is the same thing.”

“It really isn't.”

Sarah filed the objection.

Richard's appointment stalled.

Julian remained suspended.

Neither man controlled Halcyon.

For the first time, the company's independent directors did.

Then Megan received a message from an unknown number.

Victoria Lane wants to talk.

Beneath it:

May you like

She says Richard is not her partner.

She says she's afraid of him.
