Chapter 3 - THE SIGNATURE HE THOUGHT I WOULDN'T QUESTION

Julian called at 5:23.

Sarah let Megan answer.

“You're on speaker,” Megan said.

“What the hell did she do?”

No greeting.

No concern.

Sarah looked at Megan.

Megan nodded.

Sarah spoke.

“I stopped an eleven-million-dollar transfer.”

Silence.

Then Julian said:

“You had no authority.”

Sarah almost smiled.

“You used my signature to secure seventy-two million dollars.”

“I did not.”

“The bank disagrees.”

“Sarah, listen to me.”

“Now you want me to listen?”

Victoria's voice appeared faintly behind him.

“Don't tell her anything.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Still there.

Still together.

Megan wrote something on a legal pad.

Keep him talking.

Sarah asked:

“What is Project Crown?”

Julian went silent.

“Julian?”

“It's confidential.”

“From your wife or from your board?”

“Don't do this.”

“Twenty-three million dollars went to Victoria's company.”

Victoria suddenly came onto the line.

“You need to be very careful.”

Sarah laughed.

“Were the clippers not enough?”

“That isn't what happened.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

“You came into the office unstable.”

Megan's eyes narrowed.

Sarah felt the trap immediately.

“Did I?”

“You were shouting.”

“Before or after you shaved my head?”

Victoria did not answer.

Julian interrupted.

“Enough.”

Sarah looked at the clock.

For years that word ended arguments.

Enough.

It meant Julian had finished hearing her.

Tonight it had no power.

“No,” Sarah said. “Not enough.”

Julian's voice lowered.

“You're interfering with a transaction you don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

“I can't.”

“Because it's legitimate?”

“Yes.”

“Then explain it.”

Silence.

Sarah almost heard the calculation happening inside his head.

Finally:

“Project Crown is an acquisition.”

“Of what?”

“Private assets.”

“Which assets?”

“I said it's confidential.”

“From the board?”

“No.”

Megan silently opened an email.

Her expression changed.

She rotated the laptop toward Sarah.

Emergency board notice.

CEO access to acquisition funds temporarily suspended pending review.

Sarah read it.

Julian's phone began chiming in the background.

He swore.

“What did you do?”

“I asked questions.”

“You just triggered a governance crisis.”

“No. Whoever forged my signature did.”

His breathing changed.

That landed.

Megan leaned toward the phone.

“Mr. Mercer, preserve all devices and records relating to Crown Strategic Partners, JSM Holdings, Victoria Lane, and the secured facility.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“You think you can walk into my company and threaten me?”

Megan replied:

“It isn't your company.”

Sarah watched the words hit him.

Halcyon was publicly traded.

Julian was CEO.

Important.

Powerful.

But not owner of everything.

Perhaps he had forgotten.

The call ended.

Thirty minutes later Julian filed for divorce.

Sarah received electronic service while still sitting in Megan's office.

Cruelty.

Irreconcilable differences.

Financial misconduct.

Against Sarah.

She laughed.

Megan did not.

“He's moving fast.”

“He always does.”

Sarah read the petition.

Then stopped.

Paragraph twenty-six accused Sarah of interfering with Julian's business affairs due to “declining emotional stability.”

There it was again.

Not spontaneous.

Prepared.

Megan looked at the filing date metadata.

“This draft was created nine days ago.”

Sarah went cold.

Before Victoria shaved her head.

Before Sarah confronted Julian.

He had already planned to describe her as unstable.

Megan's phone buzzed.

Another file arrived.

Security footage from Halcyon's executive floor.

But when they opened it, the camera covering Julian's office had been disabled for exactly eighteen minutes.

Beginning three minutes before Sarah arrived.

Ending two minutes after she left.

Megan whispered:

“They knew you were coming.”

Sarah stared at the blank section of footage.

Victoria had not lost control.

She had prepared the room.

May you like

And suddenly Sarah wondered whether the clippers had been humiliation—

or bait.
