Chapter 2 - ELENA’S VOICE AT THE WEDDING
The screens remained black.
Then Elena’s voice entered the ballroom.
Weak from cancer, but unmistakably hers.
“Say it again, Marco. Tell me where the girls go after I die.”
Marco’s recorded voice answered.
“Hollow Creek on Monday. Once they’re enrolled, Bennett House is vacant.”
Valeria spoke next.
“The residence restriction ends. The developer closes before Rosa can interfere.”
Elena asked, “And your four-million-dollar fee?”
For several seconds, only the hiss of the tiny recorder filled the ballroom.
Then Valeria said, “That isn’t your concern anymore.”
Guests looked from the screens to the bride.
Marco moved toward the sound booth. “Turn it off.”
The audio continued.
“Those girls are not an obstacle,” Elena said. “They are your daughters.”
Marco’s answer was quieter.
“They are beneficiaries. That is the problem.”
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Valeria pulled off her veil and accused me of manufacturing the recording. Marco said Elena’s medication caused paranoia and that any audio could be edited. He ordered security to remove me.
I did not resist. Public humiliation was not the legal remedy. It was the only way to prevent them from quietly moving the girls before a judge saw the evidence.
The memorial file had been uploaded by my attorney through the wedding planner’s authorized portal. We did not hack the venue. We used the five minutes Marco approved.
Upstairs, Sofia had heard her mother’s voice through the ballroom speakers. She came down holding Camila’s and Luna’s hands. Marco blocked them from reaching me.
“You used my children to attack me,” he said.
“Elena used her own voice.”
“A dying woman’s confusion.”
Police did not arrest anyone at the wedding. No law prohibited Marco from considering boarding school or selling a trust asset. The recorder required authentication. Custody belonged presumptively to the surviving parent, not a grandmother with a dramatic presentation.
Marco and Valeria finished the reception without me. Photographs later showed half the guests gone.
The next morning, my attorney filed an emergency petition preventing the girls’ removal from Virginia and freezing any sale of Bennett House. The court granted a seventy-two-hour hold and appointed counsel for the children.
Marco responded with documents.
The first was an enrollment email from Elena to Hollow Creek Academy.

Both signatures were genuine.
