Chapter 7 - THE GIRLS WERE NOT EVIDENCE
Valeria said the line was cruel humor made during an impossible conversation.
Marco said he remembered no such words.
The recording remained useful because Elena participated and the file was authentic. It was still not the only basis for removing three children from their father.
The guardian ad litem interviewed each girl separately.
Sofia admitted hiding the recorder. She admitted telling Camila not to trust Valeria and sleeping outside Luna’s door because she feared Marco would take them at night.
“Did Grandma tell you to do those things?” the guardian asked.
“No. Mom did.”
That answer did not make Elena’s choice healthy. It showed how much adult fear Sofia had been carrying before I knew.
Camila said Marco warned that refusing Hollow Creek would make her responsible for losing the family house. Luna said Valeria told her new mothers could be chosen if old mothers died.
Neither statement alone determined custody. Together with false diagnoses, secret financial interests, and the communication blackout, they showed an immediate risk of emotional harm.
The judge placed the girls temporarily with me. Marco received supervised visits and daily calls. The court emphasized that nonparent custody required extraordinary facts and that the order would be reviewed after full investigation.
Marco appealed and accused the judge of punishing unpopular grief decisions.
He also tried to remove the guardian, challenge the evaluator, and exclude the recorder. Each motion had a legal basis. None erased the documents he signed.
The girls came to my home carrying three suitcases and six framed photographs of Elena. Luna slept in my bed. Camila refused to unpack. Sofia asked where I would keep the recorder.
“Not with you,” I said.
She looked betrayed.
“You protected it when adults failed you. That should never become your permanent job.”
We placed it in my attorney’s evidence safe.
The neutral trustee then discovered Marco had executed a deed transferring Bennett House to the developer four days after Elena signed the amendment. He placed the deed in escrow with instructions to record after the girls entered Hollow Creek.

He signed as sole trustee despite knowing Elena had appointed the bank to replace him upon his marriage to Valeria.
The escrow release date was Monday—the day he said the girls would be gone.
