Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE RACHEL NEVER SOLD

Rachel had told everyone she sold the old Morgan house after Daniel died.
She had not.
The deed transferred to a holding company.
Owner:
RJM Holdings.
Rachel Jenna Morgan.
Her initials.
She still controlled it.
Why hide ownership?
Rachel said:
“Privacy.”
Thomas laughed once.
“After probate?”
“Yes.”
The house had been rented for years.
Current tenant moved out two months earlier.
Exactly when Rachel resurfaced.
Claire requested a property inspection through counsel.
Rachel objected.
Lost.
Mason asked to go.
Claire said no at first.
Thomas said:
“He may identify relevant locations.”
The therapist agreed if carefully managed.
So they went.
Mason held Claire’s hand.
Eli stayed with a babysitter.
The house smelled smaller than memory.
Mason walked slowly.
Kitchen.
Hallway.
Stairs.
Then garage.
“No fire,” he whispered.
Claire squeezed his hand.
He looked toward an old workbench.
“That.”
A metal shelf had been bolted to the wall.
Mason pointed beneath it.
“Dad put the box there.”
Investigators removed the shelf.
Nothing.
Then Mason looked at the floor.
“He used a screwdriver.”
They found a shallow compartment cut into concrete.
Empty.
But fresh scrape marks around the edges.
Someone had opened it recently.
Rachel stood in the doorway.
Her face was pale.
Thomas asked:
“When were you last here?”
“Months.”
“Forensics will tell us.”
She said nothing.
Then Mason noticed a screw beneath a cabinet.
He picked it up.
Attached:
a tiny strip of red paint.
Same color as the box latch.
Mason started crying.
“It was here.”
Claire held him.
Rachel stepped closer.
“Mason.”
He turned away.
Rachel’s face cracked.
Then she whispered:
“I didn’t take it.”
Nobody answered.
Rachel continued:
“I swear.”
Claire wanted to believe nothing she said.
But Rachel looked terrified.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
If she did not have the box, who did?
That night, Victor disappeared.
His phone went off.
His private plane filed a flight plan to Canada.
Federal agents stopped departure because Thomas had already referred the old company matter for review.
Victor returned with attorneys.
Then a search warrant found something in his office safe.
Not the box.
A photocopy of one notebook page.
Daniel’s handwriting.
HARRINGTON SALE IS A SHAM. RACHEL THINKS SHE GETS HALF. SHE DOESN'T KNOW VICTOR PLANS TO LEAVE HER WITH THE LIABILITY.
Rachel read the copy.
Her face emptied.
Claire stared.
“You were involved.”
Rachel whispered:
“I thought it was legal.”
There it was.
Not innocence.
Not mastermind.
Participation.
Rachel had helped Victor structure the company sale after Daniel died.
Victor promised her a hidden payout.
She believed him.
Then he paid less than promised.
She spent years fighting him privately.
The boys?
Collateral to the secret.
Then Rachel said:
“You want the worst part?”
Claire looked at her.
“I came back because Victor told me Mason had started talking.”
Claire’s stomach dropped.
Rachel continued:
“He said if the box surfaced, he’d make sure I went to prison.”
May you like
Mason had been right.
His mother returned because of what he remembered.
