Chapter 14 - THE PORTABLE WINTER
Port police found the climate chamber in a refrigerated container scheduled for Vancouver.
Nolan was not there.
The orchid remained alive, but the chamber software was locked behind Greer’s biometric key. If power failed, no one else could adjust humidity without wiping the environmental history needed as evidence.
Investigators brought Greer under supervision.
She unlocked the system and found a timed message from Nolan.
You always come when the plant calls. That is why Rafe never had a chance.
The cruelty worked because it contained truth. Greer had answered the lab more reliably than anyone she loved.
Below the message was a demand: publicly accept Nolan as co-owner of the protocol within one hour, or the Swiss repository would receive a command to thaw its tissue and destroy viability.
Miriam contacted Swiss authorities. Their freezer system showed an authenticated destruction request queued through Greer’s stolen token.
Another forced choice.
This time Greer did not rush alone. She assembled the repository director, conservation council, cybercrime unit, and Rafe’s former security engineer. They split the problem: preserve the plant, block the command, and document the extortion.
Her old instincts resisted every pause. Waiting for Lucía’s approval felt unbearable while the countdown moved. Explaining the freezer architecture to cybercrime officers seemed slower than entering her own credentials.
Twice, Greer reached toward the keyboard. Twice, she stopped and let the assigned expert act.
Collaboration did not feel heroic. It felt like surrendering the comforting belief that only she understood the stakes. The timer reached six minutes before the Swiss director confirmed isolation. No one celebrated until three independent checks agreed.
Greer recorded a public statement acknowledging Nolan’s legitimate experimental contributions without granting ownership or concealing misconduct. The distinction denied him the false choice between erasure and control.
Cybercrime officers isolated the Swiss system before the timer expired.
The culture survived.
Nolan’s location appeared briefly when he checked the failed command. He was inside Aldercrest Tower.
Celeste had reported him missing while continuing to shelter him in the building.
Rafe’s old office access logs showed Nolan entering through a private executive elevator. The same office where the divorce ultimatum occurred now contained the server needed to authenticate the final patent transfer.
