Greer attended the hearing but sat behind Miriam, not beside Rafe’s family. Separation meant resisting symbolic gestures made for observers.

Nolan pleaded guilty after Celeste’s attorneys produced messages showing he proposed the initial sabotage. Celeste went to trial. Mara Voss testified that Celeste disabled alarms and ordered the orchid transfer. The voice recordings and server logs completed the chain.

Celeste was convicted on the central fraud and obstruction charges.

The university’s scientific review took longer. Greer answered for inadequate supervision, undisclosed spousal funding, and failure to review raw animal data. She did not blame marital stress.

The panel allowed her to continue research under oversight after the two-year leadership restriction.

Nolan lost his credentials. His legitimate contribution to early extraction methods remained in the scientific record under his name. Greer refused requests to remove it.

“Accountability does not require rewriting authorship,” she told the panel. “That is the kind of shortcut that created this.”

During counseling, Rafe revealed why the lab felt like abandonment. His father disappeared emotionally whenever Aldercrest struggled, locking himself in an office and telling the family survival came first. Rafe had sworn never to make love wait outside a closed door.
