Chapter 8 - THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT TOLD HALF A TRUTH
The photograph was genuine.
Nolan had hugged Greer. The image omitted the moment she went rigid and stepped away.
Rafe’s attorney urged him to deny marital problems. He refused.
“I gave my wife an ultimatum during a crisis,” he told reporters. “That was wrong. It does not make false accusations about her true.”
His statement cost him sympathy but protected Greer from becoming evidence in his performance.
Greer issued no personal defense. She released the toxicity report, her regulatory submission, and a timeline showing Nolan’s undisclosed access. Celeste called the release theft of confidential company data.
Police served Greer with a search warrant.
Her home computer, notebooks, and frozen backup samples were seized. The warrant affidavit relied on testimony from Nolan, who claimed Greer planned to move the research abroad after leaving Rafe.
The forged emails had become sworn evidence.
Rafe offered his corporate legal team. Greer declined and hired Dr. Miriam Patel, an attorney specializing in scientific misconduct.
“I will not replace dependence on the lab with dependence on my husband,” she told Rafe.
He nodded even though it hurt.
Miriam found that the emails originated from a server created through a vendor Celeste’s office used. Metadata alone could be challenged, but the wording contained a unique error: Greer never called the specimen “Aurelia-1.” Nolan did. Greer called it A17 after the collection sequence.
The emails mimicked her private notes while preserving his vocabulary.
Meanwhile, the missing technician resurfaced at a Portland clinic after a car accident. Her name was Mara Voss. She told police someone forced her vehicle off a wet road after she left Cascadia.
Mara had copied facility logs before fleeing.
They showed Nolan personally introducing salt into the orchid reservoir through a maintenance port. Celeste disabled the automatic alert. Nolan called Greer from a side office while watching a live feed.
The sabotage was proven.
But Mara’s logs showed something else.

Before Nolan contaminated the plant, he removed a healthy tissue culture and shipped it to an address in Switzerland.
The “last orchid” was no longer the only one.
