Chapter 14 - THE MAN INSIDE THE BADGE

The forged date did not erase Sienna's testimony, but it destroyed our cleanest protection for her child.
Garrick was barred from contacting her pending investigation, yet he remained free. Sienna entered a protected maternity unit under another name. Only Fletcher, Dr. Park, Naomi, and I knew the location.
Within six hours, flowers arrived at her room.
The card read: A mother cannot hide my child.
Fletcher placed the hospital under guard and ordered an internal audit. The florist had received the room number from Deputy Chief Mason Rowe.
Rowe did not run when confronted. He entered Fletcher's office, shut the door, and laid his badge on the desk.
“Garrick paid my son's medical bills,” he said. “Then Miriam showed me records proving the payments were bribes. I gave them information because every time I tried to stop, they threatened to send me to prison.”
“You sent them to Calder House,” Fletcher said.
“Yes.”
“The hospital fire alarm?”
“Yes.”
“The car at the lake?”
Rowe's face changed. “No. I told them where you were. I didn't know what they would do.”
Fletcher arrested the man who had stood beside him for nineteen years.
Rowe surrendered his messages. They showed Miriam directing leaks, evidence destruction, and surveillance. Garrick's name rarely appeared. He used his mother as distance between himself and every crime.
One message concerned Evelyn's death certificate: Make sure Margaret accepts the date.
The certificate had been issued thirty years earlier by the same clinic that later treated Sienna's fractures. Its original paper file was missing, but Rowe's messages referenced a storage vault in Ashford Medical's oldest hospital.
We obtained a warrant before anyone could warn them.
In the vault, investigators found two death certificates for Evelyn Ashford. One dated her death three days before the addendum. The other dated it two days after.
She had been alive when she signed.
Miriam had altered the public record.
There was more. A nurse's handwritten note described Evelyn trying to leave the hospital with her newborn son while heavily sedated. The infant's name had been redacted, but the birth date matched Garrick's.
Evelyn was not Garrick's aunt, as the family history claimed.
She was his mother.
Miriam had raised him as her own and spent thirty years erasing the woman who gave birth to him.
When I told Sienna, she did not look relieved.
She looked afraid.
“If Garrick learns Miriam lied about his whole life,” she said, “he won't turn against her.”

“Why not?”
“Because she made him believe love means helping someone bury the truth.”
