Chapter 6 - THE VANISHING WITNESS

Sienna disappeared between the examination room and the maternity stairwell.

For eleven minutes, no one knew where she was. Fletcher locked down the exits while nurses searched treatment rooms. I found her sling on the floor beside an emergency door, the white fabric soaked by the sprinklers.

My mind supplied every possible ending.

Then an orderly shouted from the underground garage.

Garrick had Sienna beside his car. One arm was wrapped around her waist; the other held her signed statement, torn into strips. He was speaking softly enough that the security cameras would show a husband comforting a distressed wife.

Sienna saw me first.

“I am going home with my husband,” she said too quickly.

Fletcher approached without touching his weapon. “Mrs. Ashford, your medical team has concerns.”

Garrick raised a document on his phone. “My wife has a history of anxiety. Her mother ambushed her during a medical crisis.”

Sienna's knees trembled. I saw a small red mark where his thumb pressed into her side.

“Tell him the other thing,” Garrick murmured.

Her lips parted. “My mother threatened to take my baby if I didn't accuse him.”

That lie hurt because Garrick had chosen it carefully. He knew the fear beneath every new mother's fear: that someone might decide she was unfit.

I stepped backward.

“Sienna, you do not have to protect me,” I said. “You only have to protect yourself.”

Her gaze flickered to mine. Then to the phone in Garrick's hand.

Fletcher could not arrest a man for standing beside his wife. Dr. Park could request observation, but Sienna refused admission. Garrick drove away with her.

An hour later, the hospital's alarm system was found to have been triggered from a maintenance terminal using credentials assigned to a retired facilities supervisor. That supervisor had received consulting payments from Ashford Medical for three years.

Someone had planned an exit before Sienna entered the building.

The news grew uglier that evening. Garrick released an audio clip of Sienna accusing me of threatening her. He filed a petition asking a family court to bar me from contact and to recognize him as her temporary medical decision-maker.

His strategy was no longer concealment. It was saturation. Create so many competing accusations that truth became merely one voice in a crowd.

At midnight, a blocked number called my hotel phone.

No one spoke. I heard only breathing and the faint melody of the music box I had sent for the nursery.

I said, “Two touches.”

The breathing stopped.

Then Sienna whispered, “He found the key missing.”

A door opened near her.

Before the line died, she forced out four words.

“The floor is empty.”
