Chapter 15 - THE FALSE SIGNATURE

Miriam's motive was not love alone.

Evelyn's son inherited a controlling interest held in trust. By presenting herself as the boy's mother after Evelyn died, Miriam became the family guardian and controlled those shares for sixteen years. When Garrick reached adulthood, she taught him that her survival and his power were the same thing.

The altered death certificate protected the arrangement. The forged maternal addendum protected it again.

But proving old fraud did not prove who had struck Sienna at dinner. Garrick's lawyers argued that Miriam's crimes were irrelevant to him. He claimed he had been deceived too.

Then the original dining footage surfaced.

Not from the cameras. From Miriam's wineglass.

Ashford Medical had been testing a fall-detection sensor for elder-care patients. Miriam's crystal contained a prototype in its base, linked to her tablet. When the serving bowl shattered, the impact automatically saved thirty seconds before and after the sound for product analysis.

Miriam had edited the security video but forgotten the device she was demonstrating to investors the next morning.

The recording showed Garrick shove Sienna. It showed him strike her. It captured Miriam saying her son was teaching his wife to behave.

It also captured something after I made the call.

While everyone watched the entrance hall, Miriam whispered to Garrick, “If she talks, use the clinic papers.”

He answered, “Sienna already signed them.”

“Not all of them.”

“Then I'll finish it tonight.”

The video was enough for new criminal charges and a permanent protective order. It was not yet enough to prove the corporate fraud or every forced signature.

Sienna supplied the missing link.

She asked to see the documents Garrick claimed she had signed. One bore a flourish she used only on wedding stationery. Another copied a signature from a tax return. A third was perfect.

Too perfect.

“I signed a blank electronic pad,” she said. “Garrick told me it was consent for a prenatal scan.”

Forensic analysts recovered the device history. Her signature had been captured once and applied to forty-three documents over nine months.

The final use occurred during her confinement at Calder House—on the petition declaring her incompetent.

Garrick had used Sienna's own name to take away her voice.

The district attorney prepared warrants. Before they could be served, Garrick disappeared.

So did Miriam.

And from the protected hospital, someone took Sienna's maternity file containing the confidential date and location scheduled for her induced delivery.

The theft frightened me more than the missing men. A fugitive could be tracked. A copied page could pass through a hundred hands before anyone knew it existed.

Fletcher moved Sienna before sunset and divided the new location across three sealed orders so no single officer possessed every detail. Dr. Park changed the medical schedule herself. Naomi notified the court without naming the facility.

Sienna watched us build layers around her and finally said, “This is what they did too.”

Everyone stopped.

“They called it safety. They took my phone, chose my doctors, decided who could see me.” She looked at me. “If this protection becomes another locked room, I will leave it.”

May you like

So we wrote down the limits. Sienna kept her own phone. She chose the nurses. She could dismiss any guard from inside her room and request another. The plan took longer and made our work harder.

It was also the first security plan in months that treated her as a person rather than valuable evidence.
