Chapter 8 - THE CAMERA CLIP DAVID ALMOST MISSED

The most important footage was from the night before Eleanor and Mark left.

At 11:36 p.m., Maya was asleep on the couch with Liam in the bassinet.

Eleanor and Mark stood in the kitchen.

The microphone caught their voices.

Mark:

If David sees the balance, he’ll ask questions.

Eleanor:

He won’t. He never checks family spending.

Mark:

What if Maya tells him?

Eleanor:

She won’t.

Mark laughed.

Why?

Eleanor answered:

Because she thinks he’ll blame her for needing help.

David watched the clip twice.

His anger changed.

Until that moment, he thought his mother saw Maya as lazy.

No.

Eleanor understood Maya’s deepest postpartum fear.

Being a burden.

Then used it.

That was more calculated.

Maya watched the clip once.

Then asked David to turn it off.

She cried quietly.

“I thought she was disappointed in me.”

David sat beside her.

“She wanted you to feel that way.”

Maya shook her head.

“No. I let her.”

David started to object.

Maya stopped him.

“I don’t mean it was my fault.”

He listened.

“I mean I believed somebody else had the right to decide whether I deserved help.”

That became the turning point for Maya.

Not revenge.

Recognition.
