Chapter 1 - THE CUT ACROSS HER CHEEK

Iris Dalton had worked enough rich people’s parties to know the rules.

Smile.

Move quietly.

Never look too long at anything expensive.

And when the wealthy acted cruel, pretend it was normal.

Heartwell Manor glittered like a palace that night. Crystal chandeliers glowed over polished floors, a string quartet floated through the ballroom, and servers moved between silk gowns and tuxedos with silver trays trembling in their hands.

Iris was carrying fresh glasses toward the caviar table when she saw the elderly woman.

Modest dark dress. White hair pinned neatly back. Thin shoulders. Nervous hands.

The woman stood beside the table as if someone had told her to wait there, while Vanessa Sterling stared at a smear of caviar near the ivory fabric of her gown as though war had been declared.

“Do you have ANY idea what this dress costs?” Vanessa snapped, fingers digging into the woman’s shoulder.

The woman flinched.

“I’m sorry…”

Vanessa’s face sharpened. She raised her hand.

Iris moved before she had time to think.

“Don’t touch her!”

She stepped between them, one arm reaching back to shield the older woman.

Vanessa’s diamond ring flashed.

A sharp sting tore across Iris’s cheek.

For one frozen second, no one breathed.

Then warm blood slid down her face.

The ballroom fell silent.

Iris ignored the pain and turned immediately to the elderly woman.

“Are you all right?”

Vanessa looked at the blood on her ring and sneered.

“You filthy servant. You threw yourself at me.”

Henderson, the catering manager, rushed over pale and panicking.

“You’re fired, Iris.”

Her head jerked toward him.

“What?”

“You caused a scene.”

A laugh of disbelief almost escaped her, but Preston Heartwell himself arrived before she could speak. Tall, polished, and smiling with the cold ease of a man used to being believed.

He caught Iris’s arm.

“Maybe we should call the police.”

Iris yanked free.

“Let go of me.”

She looked back at the old woman.

“Please find someone kind to help you.”

The woman’s frightened expression changed in a strange, quiet way. She gripped Iris’s hand.

“I already have.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Before anyone answered, Preston raised his voice for the room.

“I want statements from everyone nearby. Miss Sterling was attacked, and we’ll need witnesses before our legal team deals with this.”

The guests murmured. Several nodded. Henderson hurried to fetch paper.

Iris pressed a napkin to her bleeding cheek and understood exactly what Preston was doing. He was not trying to learn the truth. He was trying to write it before anyone else could.

Then she noticed something even colder.

Vanessa was no longer angry.

She was relieved.

As if Iris’s blood had just given her a useful story.

And when Iris looked toward the old woman one last time, she saw her reach quietly into her bag and send a message.

Five minutes later, as Iris stepped out into the freezing night with a torn cheek, no job, and no idea how she’d pay rent, a black sedan rolled slowly past the front gates and disappeared into the dark.

Someone was already coming.
