Chapter 14 - THE FALSE GRAVE

Greenwood Cemetery agreed to remove Jonathan’s memorial plot.

Legally, there had never been remains.

The plaque had always been ceremonial.

Patricia signed the release.

Elias supervised the work.

Ryan stood nearby with Jonathan.

The brass marker read:

JONATHAN CARTER

BELOVED HUSBAND

FATHER

BUILDER

Ryan looked at it.

“Builder?”

Jonathan shrugged.

“Patricia chose the wording.”

“She forgot liar.”

Jonathan almost smiled.

“Plenty of room on the back.”

Then Ryan asked:

“Did you ever intend to stay gone permanently?”

“No.”

“How long?”

“Six months.”

“You stayed thirteen.”

“The investigation expanded.”

“Work first.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Yes.”

Ryan shook his head.

“You still don’t hear it.”

“I do now.”

Jonathan stepped closer to the empty plot.

“When I left, I thought temporary secrecy was a tool. Patricia thought temporary authority was a tool. Malcolm thought temporary deception was a tool.”

“And?”

“All of us liked our tools too much.”

Then Elias brought over the old cemetery register.

One line listed the interment.

Contents:

memorial coffin—no remains.

Ryan stared.

The truth had always been written somewhere.

Just not where he was allowed to see it.

Jonathan removed the plaque himself.

Underneath, damp earth had never been disturbed beyond the shallow memorial foundation.

No grave.

Only the shape of one.

Ryan put the brass key on top of the marker.

“Box 317 is empty.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Good.”

“Want the key?”

“Keep it.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

He handed it back.

“I don’t need another locked thing from you.”

May you like

Jonathan took it.

And for once, he did not argue.
