Chapter 9 - THE THREAT THAT NEVER HAPPENED
The boardroom recording saved Ryan from a parole violation.
It also damaged Malcolm.
His complaint described Ryan saying:
“When Dad comes back, I’ll finish what I started.”
The recording contained no such sentence.
Malcolm’s attorney blamed misunderstanding.
Federal investigators added the false report to their file.
Then the outside valuation arrived.
North Bridge’s original rescue terms were commercially defensible.
The later yard options were not.
Fair option value:
approximately $18 million.
Value under Patricia’s amendments:
potentially $41 million.
Excess benefit:
roughly $23 million.
Patricia’s personal share meant she could receive several million from that difference.
She had a real conflict.
The board demanded she surrender the disputed enhancement pending resolution.
She refused.
Not because she denied the numbers.
Because she claimed Jonathan had abandoned his duties.
“I kept this company alive,” she told the board. “I put my own capital at risk while he vanished into a government operation.”
One director asked:
“Are you saying that entitles you to the enhanced option?”
“I am saying fair value must include the risk nobody else would take.”
Again, not nonsense.
The board proposed mediation.
Patricia agreed.
Then Ryan met her privately with lawyers present.
For the first time since prison, she looked tired.
“You think I enjoyed telling you he was dead?”
“Yes.”
She almost smiled.
“I enjoyed that you stopped calling.”
That honesty surprised him.
Then:
“I was afraid you would violate parole chasing him.”
“You were also afraid I’d learn about North Bridge.”
Patricia looked at him.
“Yes.”
Both motives.
Protection and self-interest.
Ryan asked:
“Did you think Dad was dead after the messages stopped?”
“For a while.”
“Did you look?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if he wanted to disappear from me, I was too angry to beg.”
Human.
Ugly.
Then Patricia’s phone buzzed.
She read the message and went still.
Federal agents had executed search warrants at Malcolm’s home and office.
