Chapter 2 - THE PHOTO VICTOR SHOULD NEVER HAVE BROUGHT
The photograph Ethan saw first was not the most dramatic.
That was why Victor missed it.
Margaret sat outside a shelter beneath an elevated train line.
Her hair was hidden under a wool cap.
Her hands were wrapped around a paper cup.
A digital timestamp sat at the bottom.
January 14.
8:42 p.m.
Ethan knew that date.
He knew it because Victor had sworn under oath that Margaret disappeared on December 2 and had not been seen by any Hale family representative afterward.
Yet the photograph was taken from inside a vehicle.
The lower corner caught the reflection of a dashboard screen.
Hale Security Fleet.
Vehicle 17.
Ethan had personally approved the fleet system.
Victor followed his gaze.
Too late.
Ethan raised his phone and photographed every image on the blanket.
Adrian snapped:
“What are you doing?”
“Preserving evidence.”
Victor’s voice hardened.
“Put the phone away.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Why?”
Victor said nothing.
Ethan zoomed into the dashboard reflection.
Unit 17.
He knew who was assigned that SUV.
Owen Grant.
Victor’s personal security director.
Ethan tapped one contact.
Mara Chen.
Outside counsel to the independent audit committee.
She answered immediately.
“Ethan?”
He said:
“Freeze the board action.”
Victor’s face changed.
Adrian stepped forward.
“You can’t.”
Mara replied through the phone:
“On what basis?”
Ethan looked at the photographs.
“Potential fraud, witness intimidation, and undisclosed control of a material family trust beneficiary.”
Silence.
Then:
“Send me everything.”
Ethan did.
Victor’s calm finally cracked.
“This is a family matter.”
Ethan stared.
“You made it a corporate matter when you used Mom’s disappearance to trigger the succession vote.”
That was the real issue.
Margaret Hale still held voting rights.
Not many.
But enough.
Under the Hale Family Control Trust, certain board changes required notice to all living Class A family holders.
Victor had represented Margaret as missing and legally incapacitated.
A temporary proxy transferred her vote to him.
That proxy helped create the majority that removed Ethan as CEO and installed Adrian.
If Margaret was alive and never legally incapacitated—
the vote was vulnerable.
Victor looked at the hospital bed.
