Chapter 9 - THE VOTE HAPPENED AGAIN
Hale Meridian held a new board vote six months later.
This time Margaret attended.
Not as spectacle.
As a Class A holder.
She wore a navy suit.
Silver necklace visible.
Victor was no longer chair.
He had stepped aside pending litigation and regulatory review.
Adrian remained on the board but could not vote Margaret’s shares.
Ethan expected the corrected vote to restore him automatically.
It did not.
The independent directors had concerns about him too.
He had neglected governance while consumed by expansion.
He centralized decisions.
He ignored internal succession weaknesses.
Painful.
Fair.
The board interviewed outside CEO candidates.
Ethan almost withdrew.
Margaret told him:
“If you only want the job because your father stole it, don’t take it.”
He stared at her.
“You think I shouldn’t?”
“I think you should decide whether you’re leading a company or fighting your father.”
The distinction hurt.
Ethan withdrew from the CEO ballot.
An outside executive, Sarah Bennett, became chief executive.
Ethan remained executive chair after a separate vote with new governance limits.
Adrian resigned three months later.
Not forced by revenge.
Forced by loss of support.
Victor faced civil fraud claims, elder-abuse litigation, obstruction-related charges, document-forgery allegations, and regulatory scrutiny.
Some counts stuck.
Some did not.
Dr. Crane lost his concierge practice and faced licensing discipline for signing a capacity statement without a current examination.
