Chapter 2 - THE KNIFE

The fight that destroyed Claire’s life started small.
That was the part she would replay in the hospital later, over and over, trying to find the exact second the room became a weapon.
It was a Thursday.
Rain tapping softly against the windows.
One lamp on in the condo living room.
Evan in a dark shirt with his sleeves rolled up.
Claire in an elegant cream dress because she had come straight from a foundation dinner and was too tired to change.
She had Natalia’s message open on her phone.
Not the old ones.
The new one.
A photo.
Evan in Natalia’s apartment kitchen.
No context except intimacy.
Natalia’s hand on his chest.
His face turned down toward her.
Taken in a mirror.
Beneath it:
HE STILL LOOKS BETTER WITH ME.
Claire said his name once.
Just once.
“Evan.”
He looked up from the bar cart.
Then at the phone.
Something in his expression tightened.
Not guilt.
Annoyance.
“Where did you get that?”
“That’s what you say first?”
“She’s trying to upset you.”
Claire laughed in disbelief.
“So it’s real.”
He did not answer quickly enough.
That was answer enough.
Then the whole story began crashing out in broken pieces.
Natalia was back.
They had met.
They had talked.
He “made mistakes.”
He “never meant to hurt” Claire.
He “had been confused.”
Claire felt herself going cold.
“Confused about what?”
Evan’s face hardened with defensive anger, the kind that always arrived when he realized charm would not save him.
“About everything.”
“About marrying me?”
He turned away.
That hurt more than if he had said yes.
Claire whispered:
“I built my whole life around you.”
He snapped.
“I didn’t ask you to do that.”
The cruelty in the sentence shocked them both.
Claire stared.
“I gave you everything.”
That was when he said Natalia’s name.
Not gently.
Not regretfully.
As if throwing gasoline onto a fire he had secretly wanted to see.
“Natalia never made my life feel like a trap.”
Claire stepped back.
“A trap?”
“You’re always watching me. Always making everything emotional.”
“I’m emotional because you’re cheating on me!”
He shouted back:
“I SHOULD’VE CHOSEN NATALIA!”
Silence exploded through the room.
Claire’s face broke instantly.
She took one step toward him.
Then another.
Not threatening.
Devastated.
“I loved you.”
He was breathing hard, eyes wild with a rage that was not really about Claire anymore.
It was about shame.
Exposure.
Cowardice cornered too suddenly.
The knife had been on the counter beside a half-cut lemon and an untouched glass of bourbon.
Later, everyone would ask whether he meant to grab it.
Whether he meant to use it.
Whether it was a conscious decision or a feral flash.
Claire would never know.
One second his hand was empty.
The next, he lunged.
She felt the force before the pain.
A hard, sickening impact at her side.
Her body hitting the table.
Air gone.
Knees folding under her.
She looked down.
Then up at him.
He looked as stunned as she was.
But he still screamed:
“I SHOULD’VE CHOSEN NATALIA!”
Claire dropped to the floor.
Her hand flew to her side.
Warmth.
Shock.
Silence roaring in her ears.
She reached toward him once with shaking fingers.
“I loved you…”
He stood over her, breathing like an animal.
Then, in one of the most vicious acts she would remember more clearly than the knife itself, he yanked the engagement ring off her hand.
“Natalia was always better!”
He threw the ring beside her.
Claire’s eyes locked on the small bright circle against the hardwood.
Then everything tilted.
The room dimmed.
May you like
And Evan, suddenly aware of what he had done, took one terrified step backward instead of one compassionate step forward.
That told Claire everything.
