Chapter 6 - WHY TYLER STEPPED ON HER WOUND
The prosecution would later argue that Tyler’s behavior after the shooting revealed more than panic.
Evelyn saved him.
He did not call for help.
Did not pursue the shooter.
Did not apply pressure to her wound.
He pressed on it.
Then told her:
You were only my meat shield.
The trust is mine when you die.
Tyler’s defense attorney argued the statements were unreliable.
Evelyn was injured.
In shock.
Bleeding.
No independent witness heard the first sentence.
But the necklace did.
The panic pendant had activated audio capture the moment Evelyn pressed it.
Not before.
That meant it missed the first threat.
But caught enough afterward.
Tyler:
What did you do?
Evelyn:
You really thought I didn’t know?
Then explosion.
Then Tyler:
No. No.
Then Evelyn:
I didn’t set you up, Tyler. I let you expose yourself.
Not perfect evidence of the wound pressure.
But the sports car held more.
Inside the surviving dashboard system, investigators recovered audio from the minutes before the shooting.
Tyler had been sitting in the car.
Talking to someone on one burner phone.
Voice:
L.R.:
One shot. Wide right.
Tyler:
Make it convincing.
L.R.:
She gets in the way, that’s on you.
Tyler:
She won’t.
Except Evelyn did.
And when she survived the shot, Tyler realized the staged attack had created the one outcome he could not afford.
A living witness who knew he expected the gunfire.
So he panicked.
The cruelty at the wound was not part of the original plan.
