Chapter 3 - SIX FALLS
Claire knew about three.
A bruised shin.
A cut near Emma’s eyebrow.
A sore wrist.
Margaret had been babysitting each time.
The other three Claire had never known.
A shoulder bruise.
A swollen finger.
A scrape behind the ear.
Why had no one called her?
The pediatric clinic explained.
Margaret was listed as an authorized pickup caregiver and emergency contact.
She had brought Emma to two walk-in appointments herself.
One telehealth check had been completed through the family account.
Claire opened the visit summaries.
The stories were detailed.
Emma slipped while wearing socks.
Emma tripped carrying laundry.
Emma bumped into patio furniture while playing.
Different accidents.
Same author.
Margaret.
Claire asked Emma:
“Did you trip carrying laundry?”
“No.”
“Did you hit patio furniture?”
Emma shook her head.
Claire’s voice trembled.
“What happened?”
Emma looked toward Grace.
Then back at Claire.
“Grandma says if I tell it wrong, people think I’m dramatic.”
There it was again.
Not only pain.
Narrative control.
Grace requested clinic audit logs.
One note had been edited.
Original nurse entry:
Child quiet, avoids answering mechanism questions.
Later addendum:
Grandmother reports child embarrassed because she was running indoors after repeated warning.
The addendum came from a phone call Margaret made after the visit.
Another note:
Patient says “Grandma got mad.”
Addendum:
Grandmother clarifies child means grandmother was upset after fall.
Claire’s hands shook.
The phrase had been translated for Emma.
Then one pediatric nurse remembered something not fully captured in the chart.
During the eyebrow visit, she asked Emma:
“Did somebody hit you?”
Margaret answered before Emma could.
“No.”
The nurse redirected.
“I asked Emma.”
Emma said:
“I’m not supposed to get people in trouble.”
That sentence had triggered a social-work referral.
Claire stared.
“What referral?”
The nurse looked confused.
“You never received it?”
Claire had not.
The clinic sent a secure message to the family account asking for a private parent follow-up.
