Chapter 7 - DANIEL'S CAMERA
Daniel felt guilty.
Claire did not let him make the story about himself.
“You saw one strange moment.”
“I photograph everything.”
“That doesn’t mean you understood it.”
Daniel had thousands of family photographs from:
birthdays,
holidays,
graduations,
summer parties.
Grace asked for only relevant date ranges.
No fishing through every private memory.
They reviewed images around known injury dates.
Most showed nothing.
Then patterns appeared.
Emma wearing long sleeves in warm weather.
Emma with sunglasses indoors twice before the party.
Margaret standing close whenever Claire asked about an injury.
One sequence from a spring cookout showed Emma entering the living room with no forehead mark.
Twenty-seven minutes later, she had a red spot near her hairline.
Between those photos:
no camera.
No proof.
Then Daniel remembered hearing a crash from the hallway.
Margaret came out with Emma and said:
“She walked into the linen closet.”
The correction log for that day said:
EMMA LEFT POSITION.
Result:
wall.
Different wording.
Wall.
Not fall.
Claire stared.
“What does wall mean?”
Emma began crying.
Claire stopped the question.
A child specialist later asked.
Emma said Margaret made her stand facing the wall when she argued.
That day Emma turned before Margaret said she could.
Margaret pushed her shoulder back toward position.
Emma stumbled and hit her forehead.
Margaret put on the bandage.
Then told everyone:
closet accident.
Daniel had photographed Emma before and after.
Not the event.
The timeline around it.
That was enough to corroborate change, not cause.
Then Daniel noticed one image nobody had discussed.
A summer photograph.
Margaret holding Emma’s sunglasses in one hand.
On the inside arm of the glasses was a small white label.
Daniel enlarged it.
The label read:
M-3.
Claire frowned.
“What is M-3?”

Emma answered immediately.
“Third mistake.”
