Chapter 2 - THE BUILDING WAS NEVER CELESTE’S

The doors did not imprison anyone.

That was the first fact Mara made clear.

The lockdown was a compliance hold.

Thirty seconds after she triggered it, internal fire exits remained operable. Emergency egress stayed live. Nobody was trapped against safety codes.

What changed was access.

Administrative doors locked.

Record rooms secured.

Server-room credentials froze.

Patient-file export permissions shut down.

Financial terminals entered preservation mode.

Dr. Hale knew exactly what that meant.

That was why he stopped looking calm.

Celeste did not.

“You can’t lock me in!”

“You can leave through the emergency exit,” Mara said.

“Then open the door.”

“No.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Mara, stop.”

She looked at him.

“You told me not to make a scene.”

His jaw tightened.

“What is this?”

Mara turned her phone toward him.

On the screen:

VALE RECOVERY FOUNDATION

FACILITY CONTROL — OWNER ADMINISTRATION.

Celeste stared.

“What?”

Mara looked at her.

“The center doesn’t belong to you.”

“I never said it did.”

“No. You just spent ninety days telling everyone I had nothing left.”

Celeste’s face changed.

Mara continued.

The luxury rehab was owned by the Vale Recovery Foundation.

Not by Celeste.

Not by Adrian.

Not by Dr. Hale.

The foundation had been created five years earlier after Mara and Celeste’s younger brother died from an overdose.

Mara funded most of it.

Their father’s estate funded the rest.

The center operated as a nonprofit treatment facility with independent clinical governance.

Mara served as chair of the foundation board.

She did not control treatment decisions.

But she did control certain emergency compliance systems used to preserve records when fraud or patient-safety concerns arose.

Adrian looked at Dr. Hale.

“You knew?”

Dr. Hale said nothing.

Celeste’s face turned pale.

Mara noticed.

Not because of the ownership.

May you like

Because of the word records.

That was the first clue.
