Chapter 7 - ADRIAN’S COUNTERATTACK
Adrian did what smart people do when exposed.
He stopped explaining and started accusing.
Within forty-eight hours, his attorney sent the board a letter.
Mara had abused security controls for personal revenge.
She had triggered a lockdown after romantic humiliation.
She had conflated her fiancé’s affair with nonprofit governance.
She was emotionally compromised.
Some of that was dangerous because parts were true.
Mara had pressed the button after Celeste threw coffee in her face.
The timing looked retaliatory.
Foundation counsel warned her:
“You need to separate the personal event from the compliance basis.”
Mara hated hearing it.
But she listened.
They reviewed the authorization log.
The preservation warning existed before discharge day.
The accounting complaint came before the affair was revealed.
Mara had documented concerns about Apex Transition Partners forty-eight hours earlier.
That saved her.
Not morally.
Procedurally.
Adrian’s affair did not create the compliance investigation.
It collided with one already underway.
Then he attacked further.
He produced texts from Mara:
I don’t trust Northpoint.
I will not let Adrian turn this place into a revenue machine.
If the board forces this through, I’ll shut the whole process down.
Real messages.
Harsh.
But governance concerns, not romantic threats.
