Chapter 10 - DANIEL'S RECORD

Daniel’s personnel file was not spotless.

That mattered.

The late clock-in happened.

The holiday productivity miss happened.

He had argued with Dennis about equipment.

He sometimes sounded disrespectful when tired.

Jackson said:

“He’s being turned into a saint because he happened to be at the right crash.”

Daniel heard that and nearly agreed.

He was not a saint.

He had:

missed deadlines,

forgotten Ella’s dentist appointment,

lost his temper at a dispatcher,

and once driven home so exhausted he could not remember the last five miles.

Victoria asked him privately:

“Do you want your job back?”

Daniel answered:

“I need a job.”

“Different answer.”

He looked at her.

Then:

“I want a job where stopping for someone dying doesn’t become a disciplinary point.”

May you like

Victoria nodded.

That was more useful than gratitude.
