Chapter 14 - DENNIS
Dennis apologized to Daniel in the loading yard.
“I should’ve stood up yesterday.”
Daniel kept checking a trailer seal.
“Yes.”
“I was afraid Jackson would fire me too.”
Daniel looked at him.
Dennis had a mortgage.
A wife with multiple sclerosis.
Two kids in college.
Fear had context.
Still:
“You told me to stop.”
“I know.”
“Then watched him say I didn’t call.”
“I know.”
Daniel closed the seal.
“I needed you to speak.”
Dennis nodded.
“I know.”
No instant forgiveness.
But after that, Dennis started writing narratives beside every exception code.
Not required.
Useful.
Crash rescue.
Unsafe equipment.
Driver illness.
Road closure.
The code could stay.
The explanation would travel with it.
Sometimes reform begins with one extra sentence.
Dennis started carrying a small notebook after the incident.
Not because software disappeared.
Because he wanted a human narrative before the codes swallowed it.
One page read:
Route 18 — driver stopped for elderly pedestrian collapse. EMS called. Delay 17 min.
Another:
Route 4 — trailer door latch questionable. Driver returned to yard. Maintenance confirmed repair needed.
The reports became evidence during later reviews.
