Chapter 1 - THE BUTTON IN CLAIRE'S HAND

Beth spat in Claire’s face at 6:14 on a Sunday evening.
Claire would remember the time because the antique clock in the Hawthorne living room chimed once just after it happened, soft and elegant, as if the house itself had decided not to react.
Beth had been shouting for several minutes.
“You don’t belong here!”
Claire stood near the fireplace with six-year-old Rose behind her, trying to keep the evening from becoming uglier than it already was.
Then Beth stepped closer.
Too close.
Claire smelled wine on her breath.
“Beth, back up.”
Beth smiled.
Then spat.
Warm saliva struck Claire’s cheek.
For one stunned second, Claire did not move.
Rose gasped behind her.
Evelyn—David’s mother—did not tell Beth to stop.
David did not stand.
He remained near the dining table, jaw tight, irritated by the conflict itself rather than by what had just been done to his wife.
Claire wiped her cheek slowly.
Her eyes filled.
Not with helplessness.
With disbelief so intense it felt like heat.
“You disgusting—”
Rose screamed.
Claire spun around.
Evelyn had grabbed the child by the arm.
Rose was pulling backward, terrified.
“Mommy!”
“Let her go!” Claire shouted.
Evelyn’s face twisted.
“She needs discipline!”
Then she slapped Rose across the cheek.
The sound was small.
That was what made it terrible.
A child-sized sound.
Rose burst into tears.
Something inside Claire changed instantly.
“DON’T TOUCH MY CHILD!”
She crossed the room, pulled Rose out of Evelyn’s grip, and wrapped both arms around her.
Rose buried her face against Claire’s chest and sobbed so hard her small body shook.
Evelyn pointed at them.
“She needed discipline!”
Claire stepped forward.
“Touch her again.”
Her voice was low.
Evelyn recoiled slightly.
Beth laughed behind her.
Claire turned toward David.
He had watched all of it.
“Your mother hit your daughter.”
David rubbed his forehead.
“Claire—”
“Your mother hit your daughter.”
He looked at Evelyn.
Then Beth.
Then shrugged.
“They’re right.”
Claire froze.
The room seemed to tilt.
Rose clung tighter.
Claire looked at her husband.
The man who kissed Rose goodnight.
The man who called her his little girl.
The man who once cried when she lost her first tooth because he said she was growing too fast.
“…You chose them?”
David looked away.
That answered everything.
Claire’s heartbreak disappeared.
Not healed.
Frozen.
She took Rose’s hand.
“We’re leaving.”
David stood.
“Claire, stop being dramatic.”
Claire turned so fast he stopped.
“Stay away from us.”
She walked through the front hall with Rose beside her.
Beth and Evelyn followed to the doorway.
David came after them.
Outside, dusk had settled over the long stone drive.
Rose pressed against Claire’s side.
Claire reached into her coat pocket.
David saw the small black remote in her hand.
His expression changed.
“Claire…?”
She looked back at the house.
Then at him.
Tears were still moving down her face.
But her voice was frighteningly calm.
“You should’ve never touched my daughter.”
Her thumb settled over the button.
May you like
David’s eyes widened.
And Claire began to press.
