Chapter 2 - THE HOUSE WENT DARK

The button did not explode anything.
It shut the estate down.
Exterior gates locked open for emergency exit.
Guest security codes were revoked.
Smart locks inside the residential wing disengaged from family profiles.
The private wine cellar sealed.
The garage access tied to David’s family accounts deactivated.
Every discretionary household payment under Claire’s property-management trust froze pending review.
Then the exterior lights went dark.
Not all of them.
Emergency lighting stayed on.
Security remained operational.
But the mansion stopped behaving like it belonged to the Hawthornes.
David stared at the house.
“What did you do?”
Claire looked at him.
“I revoked access.”
Beth stepped outside.
“To what?”
Claire said nothing.
Evelyn’s face changed first.
She understood money faster than the others.
“David?”
He looked at Claire.
“This is my family home.”
“No.”
Silence.
Claire continued.
“This is Rosewood House.”
Beth laughed.
“So?”
Claire looked at her.
“It belongs to the Rosewood Family Trust.”
Evelyn went pale.
David’s face emptied.
Claire saw recognition there.
Not surprise.
He knew.
Maybe not everything.
Enough.
Rose tugged Claire’s hand.
“Mommy, can we go?”
Claire looked down.
“Yes.”
That mattered more than the adults.
She opened her car door and buckled Rose into the back seat.
David followed.
“Claire, wait.”
“No.”
“We need to talk.”
“You had your chance inside.”
“My mom lost her temper.”
Claire turned.
“No. Your mother hit a six-year-old. Your sister spat in my face. You watched both and told me they were right.”
David’s mouth tightened.
“You’re overreacting.”
Claire almost laughed.
Then she held up the remote.
“This is overreacting?”
He stared.
“This is control.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“This is ownership.”
That word landed.
Beth shouted from the steps:
“You can’t kick us out!”
Claire looked at her.
May you like
“Watch me.”
Then she drove away.
