Chapter 4 - DAVID'S REAL PLAN
David did not fight the first temporary order aggressively.
That worried Maya.
“People who think they own something usually fight immediately.”
Claire frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means he may have another route.”
They found it two days later.
David had applied for a home-equity line of credit using Rosewood House as supporting collateral.
Not direct collateral.
That would have failed because the trust owned the property.
Instead, he used a letter claiming Claire intended to distribute the home into marital ownership after their tenth anniversary.
Claire stared.
They had been married eight years.
The letter included her electronic signature.
False.
Maya’s face hardened.
“How much?”
“Eight hundred thousand.”
“Funded?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“The lender requested trust certification.”
Claire almost smiled.
Her grandmother had protected her again.
Then another document surfaced.
A draft postnuptial agreement prepared by David’s attorney six months earlier.
It proposed:
Joint management authority over Rosewood household assets.
Expanded spousal decision rights.
A family occupancy guarantee for Evelyn.
A consulting retainer for Beth through a Hawthorne family-management company.
Claire stared.
“My God.”
Maya looked at her.
“Were you ever shown this?”
“No.”
“Did David ever ask you to revise the trust?”
“He said we should simplify things.”
There it was.
Simplify.
A harmless word carrying a very expensive plan.
David had apparently told Evelyn and Beth that after Claire signed the postnup, Rosewood would effectively become “family-controlled.”
Not legally true.
But enough to explain their arrogance.
They believed Claire was a temporary gatekeeper.
Not owner.
