Chapter 2 - THE KEY SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO USE

Grace waited until Adrian’s footsteps disappeared upstairs.

Then she looked at the keys.

Three brass keys.

One small silver key.

No labels.

Her stomach burned every time she breathed.

She wanted to follow Claire.

Wanted to grab her daughter and run.

But Claire had not dropped the keys by accident.

That meant there was a plan.

Grace forced herself to think like the mother Claire expected her to be.

Not panicked.

Not wounded.

Useful.

The front door was visible from where she lay.

Deadbolt.

Chain.

A second keyed lock near the bottom.

Grace crawled.

The first brass key did nothing.

The second turned.

One lock released.

The chain remained.

She could reach it.

But before lifting it, Grace stopped.

Too easy.

Adrian would hear the door.

She looked toward the rear of the cabin.

A narrow hallway led past the kitchen.

Mudroom.

Storage room.

Maybe another exit.

Grace pulled herself upright using the wall.

Every step hurt.

She reached the mudroom.

The silver key opened a cabinet.

Inside:

two cell phones,

Grace’s handbag,

Claire’s wallet,

car keys,

a small digital recorder,

and a blue document envelope.

Grace stared.

This was why Claire gave her the ring.

Not merely to escape.

To find what Adrian had taken.

Grace grabbed her phone.

Dead.

Claire’s phone had power.

Locked.

Grace knew the code.

Claire had used Caleb’s birthday for years.

0417.

The screen opened.

No signal.

Adrian had chosen the cabin well.

Grace searched settings.

Wi-Fi existed.

Password-protected.

Then she saw a network already saved on Claire’s device.

VALE-CABIN.

Connected.

One bar of satellite internet.

Grace opened messages.

Thirty-seven unsent drafts.

All addressed to Grace.

Mom, don’t come if Adrian contacts you.

Mom, Caleb didn’t die the way he said.

Mom, I found his old phone.

Mom, I think Adrian has been lying to me for months.

Grace stopped breathing.

Then she heard Claire scream upstairs.

“NO!”

Grace moved.

Pain forgotten.

She reached the stairwell.

Adrian’s voice:

“Where are the keys?”

Silence.

Then:

“Claire.”

“I don’t know.”

Grace looked down at the ring.

Adrian knew.

She had seconds.

Grace returned to the mudroom.

The third brass key opened the rear door.

Outside:

trees.

Rain.

A narrow gravel road.

And Adrian’s SUV.

Grace did not leave.

Not without Claire.

She opened the blue envelope instead.

Inside were photocopies.

Insurance records.

Bank transfers.

A police supplemental report from Caleb’s death.

And one handwritten note.

CLAIRE KNOWS TOO MUCH. KEEP HER WITH ME UNTIL GRACE SIGNS.

Grace’s hands shook.

Signs what?

A document beneath the note answered.

MORGAN FAMILY TRUST

EMERGENCY CONTROL ASSIGNMENT.

Grace was named current trustee.

Claire successor trustee.

Adrian Vale:

Special fiduciary advisor.

The signature block for Grace was blank.

Now Grace understood the cabin.

This was not only revenge.

Adrian needed something from her.

She slipped the papers beneath her coat.

Then took the small recorder.

Footsteps came down the stairs.

Fast.

Grace closed the cabinet.

Locked it.

Moved toward the rear door.

Claire appeared at the end of the hall.

Adrian behind her.

His eyes went to Grace.

Then to the keys in her hand.

For one second, nobody moved.

Claire screamed:

“RUN!”

Grace opened the rear door.

Adrian lunged.

Claire threw herself into his path.

Grace stumbled into the rain.

Behind her, Adrian shouted.

Claire screamed.

Grace reached the SUV.

Locked.

She tried the key ring.

One key fit.

The engine started.

Grace looked back.

Claire burst out of the cabin.

Adrian grabbed her coat.

Claire twisted free.

Grace threw open the passenger door.

“GET IN!”

Claire ran.

Adrian came after her.

Claire reached the SUV.

Jumped inside.

Grace hit the accelerator.

The vehicle tore down the gravel road.

For nearly a mile, neither woman spoke.

Then Claire started sobbing.

Not quietly.

Violently.

She folded toward the dashboard.

Grace reached across and caught her hand.

Claire looked at her mother.

“I’m sorry.”

Grace swallowed.

“For what?”

May you like

Claire’s face collapsed.

“For making you believe I hated you.”
