Chapter 9 - ADRIAN'S TRIAL

Adrian faced separate cases.

The kidnapping and assault-related charges from the cabin.

Financial fraud and fiduciary misconduct tied to Morgan Biomedical.

Obstruction and evidence concealment tied to Caleb’s death investigation.

Prosecutors did not charge him with Caleb’s murder.

That mattered.

They could prove he knew about the warehouse safety warning.

They could prove his financial scheme depended on fake maintenance work.

They could prove he concealed records afterward.

They could not prove he set the fire or intended Caleb to die.

Grace supported that distinction.

People asked why.

Because truth was not revenge.

At trial, Claire testified.

Adrian’s lawyer played the ugly audio.

YOU KILLED MY BROTHER!

LET HER BLEED!

Then asked:

“You kicked your own mother?”

Claire whispered:

“Yes.”

“You grabbed her clothing?”

“Yes.”

“You screamed that she deserved it?”

“Yes.”

“Because you hated her.”

Claire looked at Grace.

Then back at the lawyer.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because Adrian was watching.”

The lawyer smiled.

“Convenient.”

Claire’s face changed.

“No.”

She tapped the witness rail.

Three short.

Three long.

Three short.

“My mother taught me this when I was eight.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

Claire continued.

“It means SOS.”

The courtroom was silent.

Then prosecutors played the diagnostic phone audio.

Good. Now make her believe you hate her.

That silence afterward was different.

Adrian was convicted on the central kidnapping, coercion, assault-related, fraud, obstruction, and fiduciary counts supported by the evidence.

Not everything.

Enough.

He received a long sentence.

His assets connected to the fraud were subject to restitution orders.

Morgan Biomedical recovered part of the stolen money.

Not all.

Caleb remained dead.

No verdict could repair that.
