Chapter 7 - ADRIAN SAYS CLAIRE PLANNED EVERYTHING
Adrian surrendered through counsel four days later.
He did not run forever.
That would make him look guilty.
Instead he returned with a story.
Claire orchestrated the cabin confrontation.
Claire hated Grace.
Claire invited Grace there.
Claire attacked Grace during an argument.
Adrian intervened.
Grace’s wound occurred when she fell against broken furniture.
The trust documents were mediation drafts.
The ripped phone?
Claire’s rage.
The keys?
Ordinary cabin keys.
Adrian claimed he fled only because Grace and Claire stole his SUV and he feared they would accuse him.
His attorney released selected texts showing Claire telling Adrian:
I want her to pay for Caleb.
Real.
Sent during the months Claire believed his story.
Another:
If she comes, I’ll make her listen.
Also real.
Context became battlefield.
Then Adrian produced a recording of Claire shouting:
LET HER BLEED!
The cabin had another audio system.
Adrian had saved the line.
Not the SOS tapping.
Not the keys.
Not his own “Good girl.”
Selective evidence.
Smart.
Dangerous.
For one day, public opinion turned.
Headlines asked whether Claire had staged the kidnapping story after attacking her mother.
Grace watched television from her recovery bed.
Then turned it off.
Evidence did not become false because a headline became loud.
Claire nearly broke.
“This is exactly what he wanted.”
Grace looked at her.
“What?”
“For everyone to believe the worst version of me.”
Grace thought about that.
Then said:
“You gave him material.”
Claire flinched.
Grace continued:
“So did I.”
“What?”
“I sent Caleb messages that looked terrible without context.”
Grace took Claire’s hand.

They would have to rearrange them back.
