Chapter 9 - THE MOTHER FALLON BLAMED FIRST
Fallon’s legal strategy was brutal.
She admitted financial distress.
Admitted wanting the sale.
Denied intentionally forging Savannah’s consent.
She said Margaret handled trust legality.
Emily Cross copied the signature at Margaret’s direction.
Fallon believed proper authority existed.
Emails hurt that defense.
But her lawyers argued:
“Don’t ask until it’s done” referred to family communication, not legal consent.
Possible.
Then Margaret’s old texts.
MARGARET:
I'LL HANDLE THE PAPERWORK. YOU HANDLE MICHAEL.
Fallon:
MAKE SURE SAVANNAH CAN'T STOP IT FROM OVERSEAS.
That one was worse.
Fallon said she meant timing, not fraud.
Again.
Ambiguity.
Then Margaret testified.
She took partial responsibility.
“I believed the power of attorney was broader.”
Daniel asked:
“Did you read it?”
“Yes.”
“Then you knew it did not authorize real-estate transfer.”
Margaret paused.
“Yes.”
There.
Clear.
“Why proceed?”
Margaret looked at Fallon.
“Because she was drowning.”
Savannah felt something twist.
Margaret continued:
“Savannah had a salary. Benefits. No children. No debt. Fallon had employees, contracts, obligations.”
Savannah stared.
“So because I was stable, my property was available.”
Margaret looked at her.
“I believed you could absorb the loss.”
There it was.
The family tax on the reliable child.
Fallon was rescued because she was always in crisis.
Savannah was taken from because she could survive it.
Savannah asked:
“Did you ever ask what deployment cost me?”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“That was your choice.”
“So was Fallon’s business.”
Silence.
Then Margaret whispered:
“She stayed.”
Savannah understood.
Not money.
Abandonment.
Margaret had never forgiven Savannah for leaving after Andrew died.
Fallon stayed close.
Needed her.
Let Margaret matter.
Savannah became self-sufficient.
Margaret called that betrayal.
Then the criminal investigation offered Margaret a plea:
document fraud,
false filing,
probation possible depending on cooperation.
She refused.
Why?
Because accepting would implicate Fallon.
Then Fallon accepted a separate cooperation offer.
She agreed to testify about Margaret’s instructions in exchange for reduced exposure.
Margaret stared when she learned.
