Rivas Rewind had started as a private family page.
Old Christmas clips.
Grandparents dancing badly.
Caleb falling off a bicycle at thirteen.
Joshua burning Thanksgiving rolls.
Nothing serious.
Then one video went viral.
Nicholas tried to assemble a trampoline and accidentally trapped himself under the netting.
Three million views.
Caleb understood the opportunity before anyone else.
He began editing short family clips.
Then longer videos.
Then sponsored posts.
Within three years, Rivas Rewind had more than four million followers across several platforms.
Caleb became the face of it.
Nicholas loved the attention.
Victoria loved comments calling her “America’s funniest grandma.”
Joshua appeared occasionally.
Lily appeared too.
At home after the birthday party, Joshua opened the memory card.
The folder contained hours of footage.
Birthday setup.
Caleb testing camera angles.
Victoria asking whether the eggs would wash out of Lily’s dress.
Nicholas saying:
“Make sure Joshua doesn’t come out early.”
Joshua stopped the video.
He felt sick.
Then he found a folder labeled:
POOL DAY — PRIVATE.
He opened it.
Last summer.
Lily was nine.
She stood at the edge of Nicholas and Victoria’s pool wearing goggles.
Caleb teased her about being afraid of the deep end.
Lily repeatedly said:
“I don’t want to jump.”
Caleb kept filming.
Eventually Nicholas splashed water at her.
Lily cried.
The clip ended.
Joshua had never seen it.
Then another file appeared.
Edited version.
Music.
Reaction cuts.
A title card template.
Ready to upload.
But never posted.
Joshua called Caleb.
“You filmed her crying at the pool.”
Caleb sighed.
“We didn’t upload it.”
“That is your defense?”
“She got upset. I killed the video.”
“You kept the footage.”
“I keep all footage.”
“Why?”
“That’s how production works.”
Joshua stared at the screen.
Then noticed a document sitting in the same folder.
PDF.
LILY RIVAS — RECURRING PARTICIPANT PROFILE.
He opened it.
Age.
Birthday.
Favorite foods.
School hours.
Interests.
Fear triggers.
Joshua froze.
Under a section titled:
HIGH-ENGAGEMENT REACTIONS
someone had written:
HATES MESSY PRANKS. STRONG EMOTIONAL RESPONSE.
The document had been updated three weeks before her birthday.
At the bottom was a line:
PARENTAL CONSENT — ACTIVE.
Joshua knew that could not be right.
Six months earlier, after Lily complained about filming, he had told Caleb:
“No more prank videos with her.”
Caleb had said:
“Fine.”
Joshua searched his email.
Found his message.
Clear.
Written.
Then he looked at the participant profile again.
