Chapter 7 - THE EMOTIONAL ANCHOR

Caleb hated the phrase when Joshua used it.

“You turned my daughter into the emotional anchor.”

“That is not what I call her.”

Joshua slid the sponsor deck across the table.

Page twelve.

Audience retention analysis.

When Lily appeared:

watch time increased,

comments increased,

family-purchase conversion increased.

The deck called her:

AUTHENTIC HEART OF THE RIVAS FAMILY.

Joshua stared at Caleb.

“You measured her.”

“That is what media companies do.”

“She’s ten.”

“We measure content, not her worth.”

The distinction was real.

Still uncomfortable.

“You used Lily too,” Caleb said.

Joshua’s face hardened.

“No.”

“You posted her in front of a finished kitchen.”

“She was eating cookies.”

“With your company logo in the caption.”

Joshua remembered.

Lily standing on a stool.

Flour on her nose.

He had written:

Even my toughest inspector approves.

Thousands of views.

He had never asked her.

The hypocrisy stung.

Caleb leaned back.

“You want the simple version where I’m the monster and you’re the protective dad. It’s not that simple.”

Joshua answered:

“No. It isn’t.”

That surprised Caleb.

Then Joshua added:

“But she told you no.”

Silence.

There.

The line that survived every complication.

The business could be real.

The old consent could be real.

The revenue could be real.

Lily’s previous enjoyment could be real.

And her no could still matter now.

Joshua asked:

“When did she first tell you she wanted out of prank content?”

Caleb looked away.

“Months ago.”

“How many?”

“Maybe four.”

“Before my email?”

“Yes.”

Joshua stared.

“So my revocation wasn’t the first notice.”

“No.”

“Who did she tell?”

Caleb swallowed.

“Mom.”

Victoria.

Joshua stood.

Caleb added quickly:

“She told Mom she didn’t like messy videos. Mom thought she could talk her through it.”

Joshua’s anger shifted.

Not disappeared.

Shifted.

Victoria had known before anyone else.

Then Caleb said something stranger.

“Mom didn’t just talk to her.”

“What did she do?”

Caleb hesitated.

“She made a deal with Lily.”

Joshua stopped.

“What deal?”

May you like

Caleb answered:

“She promised Lily that if she did the Sunridge birthday video, the cameras would leave her alone for a year.”
