Chapter 1 - HOW DO YOU KNOW?

Margaret was already bent over the dining table when Emily ran into the room.

Her grandmother’s hands were shaking.

Baby Noah was crying inside a huge open glass display jar, his blue blanket bunched around him, his upper body already lifted above the rim.

The jar was wide.

Dry.

Open.

Never sealed.

That did not make the sight acceptable.

Margaret had both hands under Noah’s shoulders and back.

“Come on, baby. Come on.”

Then Vanessa charged in from the kitchen.

“Stay away from him!”

She grabbed a fistful of Margaret’s gray hair and yanked backward.

Margaret cried out.

But she refused to release Noah.

She pulled him fully free, wrapped him against her chest, and twisted her body to shield him.

“You’re not touching this baby!”

Emily froze for half a second.

Then saw Vanessa still dragging Margaret by the hair.

A heavy ceramic vase sat on the counter.

Emily grabbed it, charged forward, and struck Vanessa once across the guarded upper shoulder.

Vanessa stumbled sideways and fell.

“What the hell are you doing?!”

Margaret backed away with Noah.

He was alive.

Breathing.

Physically unharmed.

Richard burst through the back door.

He saw:

Vanessa on the floor,

Emily holding the vase,

Margaret clutching Noah,

the enormous glass jar on the table.

“It was an accident!”

Emily turned.

Vanessa went still.

Richard rushed forward.

“She only had him in there for a second!”

Margaret froze.

Emily lowered the vase.

Her voice changed.

“How do you know that?”

Richard’s face drained pale.

Nobody had told him what Vanessa had done.

He had entered after Noah was already out.

So how did he know:

where Noah had been,

how long he had been there,

and that Vanessa had been the one holding him?

Emily pulled out her phone.

“Don’t move.”

Richard said:

“Emily, please.”

She looked at the glass jar.

A folded fleece liner sat inside.

Not random.

Prepared.

Then she noticed a phone stand on the buffet cabinet.

Empty.

Another small tripod pointed toward the dining table.

Margaret saw it too.

“What is that?”

Vanessa struggled upright.

“No.”

Emily walked to the tripod.

A second phone was clipped into it.

Recording.

The screen showed:

00:06:41.

Six minutes and forty-one seconds.

Not one second.

Not an accident.

Then the video preview showed an earlier frame.

Richard was standing beside Vanessa.

May you like

Noah was in his arms.

And Richard was lowering the baby toward the same jar.
