Chapter 2 - TAKE THREE

Emily did not watch the full video in the dining room.
She called police first.
Noah was checked by paramedics.
No injury.
No breathing problem.
No skin marks.
No glass contact with exposed skin.
He had been wrapped the entire time.
That mattered.
It did not erase the risk.
Then an officer separated everyone.
Vanessa said:
“It was a photo setup.”
Richard said:
“We never put him in danger.”
Margaret stared at him.
“You put a newborn inside glass.”
“Partly inside.”
Emily almost laughed at the distinction.
Then the officer asked:
“Who is the child’s legal parent?”
Richard raised his hand.
“I am his father.”
No one disputed that.
The immediate case therefore was not:
a stranger taking a baby.
It was:
whether a parent and another adult had used dangerously poor judgment,
whether there had been assault between adults,
and whether Noah required protective review.
Then Emily watched the footage with an investigator.
The clip began before Vanessa entered.
Richard stood beside the jar.
Vanessa adjusted a fleece insert.
Richard held Noah upright.
Vanessa said:
“Lower the blanket more. I need the glass around him.”
Richard answered:
“Not past his chest.”
Vanessa:
“Obviously.”
Then Richard carefully lowered Noah—still wrapped—until the wide glass rim reached the outside of the blanket around his lower torso.
He held him the entire time.
Vanessa filmed.
Ten seconds.
Then lifted him out.
Noah fussed.
Vanessa checked the screen.
“Too safe.”
Richard frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It looks like a baby sitting in a bowl.”
Then she changed the angle.
Take two.
Richard held Noah.
Same basic position.
Eight seconds.
Noah cried.
Vanessa:
“Better.”
Then Richard:
“Stop. He hates it.”
They lifted him.
Then there was a gap.
Three minutes.
Adult voices in kitchen.
Then take three.
This time Vanessa held Noah.
Richard was off-screen.
She lowered him slightly deeper into the fleece-lined opening.
Still not sealed.
Still fully supported.
Noah cried.
Margaret walked in.
Her scream ended the setup.
Then Richard rushed outside through the back door before Emily arrived.
Why?
He claimed:
to get the infant car seat from his truck because he assumed they would take Noah for evaluation.
But he returned without it.
The investigator asked:
“Why did you leave the room?”
Richard had no good answer.
Then Emily noticed the phone interface.
The recording was not the camera app.
It was a creator-production platform.
Project title:
LEGACY BABY — SHOCK SAFE SERIES.
Underneath:
TAKE 3.
Emily stared.
“What is Legacy Baby?”
Richard closed his eyes.
Vanessa said nothing.
Then the investigator tapped project details.
Client:
BRIGHTHOUSE CREATOR NETWORK.
Contract amount:
$185,000 GUARANTEED + PERFORMANCE BONUS.
Emily looked at her father.

He had signed a commercial content contract using Noah’s image.
And nobody in the family had known.
