Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO SAID IT WAS ONLY SECURITY

Derek came to the board voluntarily.

He brought counsel.

Good sign.

Or very smart.

He admitted approving the consultant.

“We were evaluating transaction-related security risks.”

Ava stared.

“In my home?”

“Ryan said you had threatened to destroy company property and disrupt closing.”

“He told you I was dangerous.”

“He told us there was escalating domestic conflict.”

“So you rehearsed camera angles?”

Derek’s jaw tightened.

“I did not know Vale did that.”

Naomi played the clip.

“If she stays left, you won’t see me.”

Derek looked genuinely disturbed.

Maybe.

He explained the invoice.

Northstar had requested a risk assessment because Ryan claimed Ava might sabotage systems or remove records before closing.

Michael Vale was supposed to assess physical security.

Not stage a domestic incident.

Vale had disappeared.

No current address.

His phone off.

Ryan’s lawyer called the videos “training exercises unrelated to Ava.”

Then Ava received another anonymous message.

Vale’s name again.

A storage-unit number.

Police searched it.

Inside:

Old cameras.

Tripods.

Printed floor plans of the penthouse.

And a folder.

BENNETT RESPONSE PATTERN.

Ava’s stomach turned.

Pages documented her behavior.

At raised voice: retreats.

At blocked exit: attempts alternate room.

At countdown: movement begins between four and three.

At kitchen confinement: likely object-seeking behavior.

Ryan had turned her fear into data.

The last page contained a handwritten note:

Target must choose weapon independently.

Naomi whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Ava did not cry.

Not yet.

She turned the page.

At the bottom:

Success condition: visible threat + spouse non-contact posture.

Ryan had not wanted to hit her in the kitchen.

May you like

He had wanted her to hit him.

And someone had helped him design the room around that choice.
