Chapter 2 - THE CAMERA HE WANTED

Ava’s hands tightened around the poker.
Ryan stepped closer.
“Go ahead.”
Her heart slammed.
He wanted the image.
Ava with a weapon.
Ryan empty-handed.
The bruises would become irrelevant if she gave him what he needed.
She looked toward the ceiling camera.
The tiny status light was on.
That camera had been dark when she ran through the hall.
Why was it recording now?
Ryan took another step.
“You’ve been saying I scare you.”
His voice stayed calm.
“So show everyone what scared looks like.”
Ava lowered the poker half an inch.
His eyes sharpened.
“Don’t.”
That one word confirmed everything.
He needed it raised.
Ava let the poker fall.
Metal hit stone.
Ryan’s face changed.
She slapped the fire alarm beside the service door.
The apartment erupted with sound.
Ryan lunged.
Ava twisted away.
The building alarm spread floor by floor.
Doors opened.
Residents entered hallways.
Ryan grabbed Ava’s wrist.
She screamed.
Not privately.
Loud enough for neighbors.
“LET GO OF ME!”
A door opened across the hall.
Mr. Feldman from 19B stepped out.
Ryan released her instantly.
“Ava’s having an episode,” he said.
She stared.
So fast.
So ready.
Ava ran toward the emergency stairs.
Ryan did not chase.
He did not need to.
By the time she reached the lobby, police were already being called.
But not by Ava.
Ryan called first.
He told them his wife had threatened him with a metal weapon.
Twenty minutes later, Ava sat on the curb wrapped in a building blanket while an officer asked whether she had raised the poker.
“Yes.”
“Did you threaten to hit him?”
“I told him to come closer.”
The officer wrote that down.
Bad.
Ava knew it.
Ryan appeared outside with a small cut on his hand.
She had not caused it.
He said nothing to her.
Only looked hurt.
Controlled.
Perfect.
Then the officer showed Ava a video on Ryan’s phone.
Eight seconds.
Ava against the counter.
Poker raised.
“Come closer.”
Ryan stepping forward.
No countdown.
No chase.
No kicked door.
No recording phone visible.
Just Ava.
The officer asked:
“Mrs. Bennett, what happened before this?”
Ava looked at Ryan.
His eyes said:
Good luck.
Then her own phone buzzed in the officer’s evidence bag.
A board reminder.
8:00 A.M. SPECIAL VOTE — NORTHSTAR RECAPITALIZATION.
Ava went cold.
May you like
Ryan did not need her arrested forever.
He needed her unavailable by morning.
