Chapter 14 - THE ESTATE DINNER
Six months later Richard called a family meeting.
Not to reveal secrets.
To eliminate future ones.
He invited:
Claire,
Christopher,
his daughter Anne,
Abigail,
and the independent trustee.
Christopher almost refused.
Then came.
Richard reviewed the estate structure openly.
No one received percentages emotionally.
Documents spoke.
Christopher would inherit substantial assets.
Anne would too.
Samuel had a separate capped trust.
Abigail had defined spousal protections.
No one could rewrite it through pressure.
Then Richard said:
“I created secrecy because I feared conflict.”
He looked at Christopher.
“That fear helped create worse conflict.”
Christopher stared.
Richard continued:
“I also raised you to believe silence was self-control.”
Claire looked at her husband.
Richard said:
“It was often avoidance.”
Christopher nodded slowly.
Then Abigail spoke.
“I hid because I wanted privacy.”
She looked at Claire.
“And because I was afraid you would treat me like I was foolish.”
Claire answered:
“I probably would have.”
Abigail smiled sadly.
“That does not justify lying.”
Anne said:
“Can we all agree nobody gets secretly married again?”
Richard answered:
“No promises.”
Everyone laughed.
Even Christopher.
A small sound.
