Chapter 11 - THE COURT DOES NOT TAKE SOPHIE AWAY FOREVER
Jenna asked the court to suspend Ryan’s unsupervised parenting time.
Temporarily.
The judge reviewed:
the Eli incident,
medical documentation,
police report,
David’s statement,
Rachel’s corrected declaration,
Ryan’s past safety incident,
and his prior progress.
The court did not terminate parental rights.
No dramatic permanent ban.
Instead:
temporary supervised contact,
updated parenting assessment,
anger-management work,
and family-therapy recommendations before any expansion.
Ryan was furious.
Rachel told him:
“This is not me taking Sophie.”
“You caused this.”
“No.”
“You called Jenna.”
“I told her what happened.”
“You knew what she’d do.”
“I knew she deserved accurate information before court.”
The judge made the decision.
Not Rachel.
That mattered.
Threats spoken in rage can overstate personal power.
Rachel could not personally erase Ryan from Sophie’s life.
She could stop protecting him from consequences.
Rachel’s divorce lawyer also warned her not to use Sophie as leverage.
“You said what in the entryway?”
Rachel repeated the threat.
The lawyer sighed.
“Understandable. Don’t repeat it.”
“Why?”
“Because Sophie is not yours to award or remove.”
Rachel nodded.
“And because if you sound like you’re using a child to punish a spouse, it muddies a legitimate safety concern.”
That embarrassed Rachel.
She had been right to protect Eli.
Wrong to phrase Sophie as a consequence she personally controlled.
Rage had turned a legal process into a weapon in her mouth.
