Chapter 11 - THE AUNT WHO DISAPPEARED FROM THE FAMILY

Evelyn Mitchell had been Rose's older sister.
Brilliant.
Restless.
Ambitious.
And dead.
At least that was what Ava had always been told.
“She died before I was born.”
Rose shook her head.
“No.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“Then why did you tell me that?”
“Because she asked us to.”
“Why?”
Rose looked toward Maya.
“This is family.”
Ava's voice hardened.
“So was I.”
Rose flinched.
Ava immediately regretted the sharpness but did not withdraw the question.
Rose began.
Evelyn had worked with Robert Bellamy in the late 1990s.
Not as an employee.
As a mathematician and systems strategist.
She developed an early logistics optimization model that later became the intellectual core of Meridian's technology.
Bellamy wanted ownership.
Evelyn refused.
Then she became pregnant.
With Ava.
Ava could not speak.
Rose continued through tears.
“I raised you.”
Ava stared.
“You're my aunt?”
“Biologically.”
“Who was my father?”
“I don't know.”
“Did Mark know?”
“No.”
“Bellamy?”
Rose looked away.
That was answer enough.
Ava stood so fast the chair slid backward.
“You let me marry into a company built from my biological mother's work?”
“We didn't know Meridian was connected until years later.”
“When?”
“After your wedding.”
“And you said nothing.”
“Evelyn made me promise.”
“Evelyn is dead.”
Rose whispered, “We thought she was.”
Ava stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Rose covered her mouth.
A knock sounded.
Maya's investigator entered holding a fax.
Samuel Reed had sent a sworn declaration.
In it, he identified Evelyn Mitchell as the woman who signed Meridian's earliest intellectual-property transfer.
He also stated she had signed under duress.
Bellamy had threatened to expose something that could destroy her custody claim over her infant daughter.
Ava.
The story suddenly became larger than corporate theft.
Bellamy had manipulated Evelyn.
Then, years later, Mark.
Then Ava.
Three generations of silence.
“Where is Evelyn?” Ava asked.
Rose shook her head.
“I haven't seen her in twenty-eight years.”
“Then why did you say you thought she was dead?”
“Because that's what Bellamy told us.”
Maya looked up sharply.
“When?”
“After she disappeared.”
Ava felt cold.
“What exactly did he say?”
Rose's voice dropped.
“He said Evelyn had made a choice and we'd be safer if we treated her as dead.”
Silence swallowed the room.
Then Ava's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A woman's voice spoke.
Older.
Shaking.
“Ava?”
Her knees nearly gave out.
“Yes?”
The woman began crying.
May you like
“My name is Evelyn.”
