Chapter 15 - THE PERSON BELLAMY FEARED

Police protection increased.
The court accelerated discovery.
Bellamy's lawyers became more aggressive.
Then, unexpectedly, Bellamy disappeared from public view.
His office claimed illness.
Ava did not believe it.
Neither did Mark.
“He's scared of someone.”
“You said that before.”
“No. Bellamy makes other people afraid. I've never seen him hide.”
The key came from Caroline's records.
One recurring payment code:
SABLE.
Maya traced it through trusts and offshore accounts.
Eventually it led to a domestic beneficiary.
Not Bellamy.
Not Mark.
Not Lena.
Henry Caldwell.
Ava stared at the screen.
Again.
Henry.
They confronted him with federal investigators present.
Henry did not run.
He sat down.
“I wondered when you'd find it.”
Ava felt sick.
“Caroline was sending you money?”
“No.”
“Then explain.”
“SABLE was a restitution account.”
“For what?”
“For Evelyn.”
Evelyn looked stunned.
Henry continued.
“For twenty-five years I diverted a portion of fees Bellamy paid me into a trust.”
“You stole from him?” Maya asked.
“I returned money to the woman we stole from.”
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“You could have just found me.”
“I was a coward.”
Ava stared.
That word had appeared too often in this story.
Coward.
As though cowardice excused damage.
It did not.
But at least Henry no longer pretended otherwise.
“Did Caroline know?”
“Yes.”
“She discovered SABLE?”
“Yes.”
“Did Bellamy kill her?”
Henry's face hardened.
“I believe so.”
No proof.
Not yet.
Then Lena resurfaced.
She walked into a federal field office in Indianapolis with two attorneys and requested immunity.
Her statement detonated the case.
Bellamy had orchestrated the shell-company transfers.
Mark knew enough to be guilty of fraud but not enough to understand the final destination.
Lena had helped conceal assets.
She admitted it.
But two months earlier she discovered Caroline was collecting records.
Lena secretly began copying Bellamy's communications to protect herself.
The night after the gala, she fled because Bellamy's security chief came to her apartment.
She believed she would be killed.
“Who put the glass in Ava's apartment?” investigators asked.
Lena's answer surprised everyone.
“Mark.”
Ava stared.
Mark denied it.
Lena insisted.
“He wanted to scare her.”
Mark called it a lie.
Forensic evidence could not prove who carried the glass inside.
Then building surveillance surfaced.
A man entered Ava's floor at 1:04 a.m.
Baseball cap.
Dark coat.
Not Mark.
Not Bellamy.
When analysts enhanced the image, Henry recognized him.
“That's Victor Shaw.”
Bellamy's private security chief.
The same man Lena feared.
Federal agents raided Shaw's home.
They found burner phones.
Photos of Ava.
Photos of Rose.
Photos of Caroline.
And an encrypted laptop.
Inside was a folder called CONTINGENCIES.
One file was labeled:
AVA — ACCIDENT SCENARIOS.
Maya went pale.
Ava did not.
Something strange had happened.
The fear was still there.
But it no longer controlled her.
“Open it.”
The investigator hesitated.
Then clicked.
The first page contained a schedule.
Dates.
Locations.
Routes Ava frequently traveled.
May you like
The final entry was tomorrow.
