Chapter 18 - THE MISTRESS CAME BACK WITH LEVERAGE

Lena had not disappeared empty-handed.

Before fleeing Bellamy, she had moved money.

Not Meridian's hidden money.

Her own.

Years of compensation.

Investments.

Assets protected through legal structures Bellamy had taught her to use.

After cooperating with federal investigators, Lena used those funds to buy distressed Meridian debt at a fraction of its original value.

Now she had leverage.

Ava met her in a conference room.

For the first time since the gala.

No red dress.

No Mark.

No audience.

Lena wore a gray suit.

Ava sat across from her.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then Lena said, “I'm sorry.”

Ava almost laughed.

“For which part?”

Lena looked down.

“The water.”

“Start earlier.”

“The affair.”

“Earlier.”

Lena's eyes lifted.

“The money.”

“Earlier.”

Understanding crossed Lena's face.

“Helping Bellamy erase you.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Lena swallowed.

“I was ambitious.”

“So was Evelyn.”

“That isn't what I mean.”

“I know.”

“I liked winning.”

Ava held her gaze.

“Did throwing water on me feel like winning?”

Lena's face tightened.

“For five seconds.”

“And after?”

“I realized everybody had seen exactly who I was.”

Ava leaned back.

“Now you're blocking Meridian's settlement.”

“I want protection.”

“You already have immunity.”

“Not legal protection. Financial.”

“For what?”

“Haven.”

Ava frowned.

Lena slid a document forward.

She proposed converting part of her debt position into a permanent endowment for Haven.

In exchange, Ava would agree not to pursue separate civil damages against her.

“You think you can buy forgiveness?”

“No.”

Lena's answer was immediate.

“I think I can pay restitution.”

Ava studied her.

That difference mattered too.

Forgiveness could not be purchased.

Restitution could be owed.

“You'll testify publicly?”

“Yes.”

“About Bellamy?”

“Yes.”

“About Mark?”

“Yes.”

“About yourself?”

Lena hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Ava pushed the agreement back.

“Then remove the confidentiality language.”

Lena did.

The Meridian settlement passed two weeks later.

Evelyn's name was restored to the company's historical record.

Ava's founding ownership was legally recognized.

A permanent fund was created.

Haven's future stabilized.

But one issue remained.

Bellamy.

At trial, his attorneys portrayed everyone around him as unreliable.

Mark was a convicted fraudster.

Lena an admitted participant.

Henry a compromised former lawyer.

Evelyn a woman who had remained silent for decades.

Ava a financially interested claimant.

It was clever.

Ugly.

Effective.

Then prosecutors produced Caroline's final recording.

No one knew it existed.

Her voice filled the courtroom.

She was speaking to Bellamy.

“You destroyed Evelyn's life.”

Bellamy answered.

“I preserved what she built.”

“You stole it.”

“I made it valuable.”

“And Ava?”

A pause.

Then Bellamy said:

“Ava was never supposed to know who she was.”

The courtroom went silent.

Caroline asked, “And if she finds out?”

Bellamy's answer became the sentence prosecutors built their closing argument around.

“Then I'll do what I've always done.”

Another pause.

“I'll make sure nobody believes her.”

Ava closed her eyes.

There it was.

The entire machinery.

Not just theft.

Disbelief.

Control the story and you control the victim.

May you like

Except this time, the story had escaped him.
