Chapter 1 - THE KEY

Derek Carter arrived at the Carter Performance garage furious enough to make three employees quietly leave.

Samantha stood beside the yellow Lamborghini wearing a white business suit.

Calm.

Perfectly still.

Derek stopped six feet away.

“Give me the car.”

Samantha looked at him.

“No hello?”

“It’s mine.”

“It belongs to Carter Performance.”

“I’ve driven it for six years.”

“That is not ownership.”

Derek stepped closer.

“Do not do this today.”

Samantha almost smiled.

Today.

The word carried weeks of divorce filings, frozen accounts, board fights, accusations, and one missing transfer no one could explain.

Two million dollars.

Gone from a corporate reserve account.

Derek claimed it had been moved for “strategic restructuring.”

Samantha’s auditors could not find where it ended.

Now he wanted the Lamborghini too.

“Give me the key.”

Samantha looked down at the key in her hand.

Her phone had buzzed less than a minute earlier.

SERVICE ALERT — VEHICLE NOT CLEARED FOR NORMAL OPERATION.

She had not yet opened the full notice.

Derek held out his hand.

“Now.”

Samantha tossed him the key.

“Fine. Take it.”

His expression changed.

He had expected a fight.

Then he caught the key and smirked.

“Finally learned your place.”

Samantha watched him get into the car.

The engine came alive.

He accelerated out of the garage.

Too fast.

Samantha opened the service alert.

Her face changed.

BRAKING-CONTROL FAULT — ROAD OPERATION PROHIBITED PENDING CLEARANCE.

She immediately called the service center.

No answer.

Then she opened the vehicle account.

Remote emergency assistance available.

She requested it.

The screen showed:

REQUEST PENDING.

Samantha looked toward the garage exit.

Her phone rang.

Derek.

She answered.

His voice was no longer arrogant.

“SAMANTHA! THE BRAKES AREN’T WORKING!”

She closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“What did you do?!”

Samantha looked at the banking app already open on her second phone.

The missing two million dollars had vanished three weeks earlier.

She had one chance to find where Derek put it.

And then she made the decision that would haunt the rest of the case.

“Two million dollars.”

“What?!”

“Transfer two million to Carter Performance escrow.”

A horn screamed through his phone.

“Samantha!”

“And I activate the brakes.”

He swore.

The car was approaching an intersection.

Samantha watched the emergency request status.

PENDING.

Then Derek shouted:

“I’M GOING TO CRASH!”

The transfer notification appeared.

$2,000,000 RECEIVED.

Source account:

BLACKRIDGE AUTOMOTIVE PARTNERS.

Samantha froze.

Blackridge.

A company she had never heard of.

Then the emergency system status changed.

ACTIVATED.

On Derek’s line came tires, horns, and a scream.

Then silence.

Samantha whispered:

“Derek?”

May you like

Nothing.

And for one terrible second, she had no idea whether the car had stopped in time.
