Chapter 14 - THE PERSON WHO STARTED BEFORE DEREK

The file was written three years after James Carter died.
One year before Blackridge.
Author:
Unknown.
It modeled what happened if Samantha resigned, became incapacitated, divorced, or lost board confidence.
Derek’s name appeared only once.
Possible interim executive.
Howard’s name appeared three times.
Possible board stabilizer.
Jonathan Price:
Possible asset buyer.
The architecture existed before Derek’s Blackridge plan.
Someone had mapped the pieces.
Howard denied writing it.
Jonathan denied seeing it.
Derek’s lawyer denied knowledge.
Then Marcus found metadata.
The file originated from an old strategy workstation used by James Carter’s executive office.
After James died, only two people retained physical access.
Howard.
And Samantha’s aunt, Rebecca Carter.
Rebecca had served as vice chair before retiring quietly.
Samantha had not spoken to her in eighteen months.
Rebecca came to the investigation voluntarily.
Seventy.
Elegant.
Sharp.
She read the file.
Then looked at Samantha.
“I wrote the first version.”
Samantha stopped breathing.
“Why?”
“Because your father asked me to.”
Silence.
James Carter had feared succession chaos.
Before his death, he asked Rebecca to model scenarios if Samantha could not lead.
Not because he wanted her removed.
Because he wanted the company protected.
After his death, Rebecca updated the file once.
Then stopped.
Someone else later modified it.
Who?
Metadata showed later edits under James’s master account.
Howard had seen the file.
Jonathan had seen parts.
Derek eventually saw the proxy scenarios.
A contingency plan became a blueprint.
Samantha stared at Rebecca.
“My father started this?”
“He started planning for emergencies.”
“And they turned me into one.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.”
That distinction mattered.
Then Rebecca handed Samantha a sealed letter James had written but never sent.
Sam,
If the company ever requires you to become cruel in order to keep it, sell the company.
Samantha read the sentence twice.
Her father had not wanted control preserved at any cost.
Everyone claiming to defend his legacy had forgotten the simplest instruction.
Then Rebecca said:
“There is one person who accessed the master account after I stopped.”
“Who?”
Rebecca looked toward the closed conference-room door.
“Your husband.”
Samantha shook her head.
“We know Derek used credentials later.”
“No.”
Rebecca’s face hardened.
“I mean before you married him.”
Samantha froze.
Derek had accessed her father’s succession files while he was still only a consultant.
Before the wedding.

Before she gave him official authority.
Before anyone thought he had something to take.
