Lillian had contributed to the confusion too.
For nine years she said:
our house.
She let Marcus manage contractors.
Authorized him on household accounts.
Used joint money for improvements.
Never insisted they document whether renovation spending would be treated as:
gift,
marital expense,
or reimbursable contribution.
Why?
Because nobody wants to run a marriage like litigation.
Fair.
But ambiguity becomes expensive when trust collapses.
Lillian also used ownership as a weapon during arguments before surgery.
Once she told Marcus:
“You live here because I let you.”
Cruel.
Legally rooted.
Emotionally destructive.
She apologized for that later.
Not because Marcus’s violence was her fault.
